My objective takeaways from today's game...
First the positive... Marek played well and appears to have gotten stronger. That's important because if Sidibe is hurt, we could be forced into the small ball lineup with him playing center more than we hoped to. I was super impressed with Griffen who appears to be the real deal. I think he will continue to get better and may even prove to be the leader of the team by season's end. Today he played within himself, as a newbie to the team, but I suspect he will be even more aggressive in future games. I was also very impressed with Kadary Richmond, and feel he should've seen more minutes in light of how poorly JG3 played. Buddy continues to stroke the ball, and will be a leader as well. Quincy rebounded nicely from a mediocre first half, and was a real difference maker in the second half. Lastly, we rallied after being down by a many as 15-16 points (I'm not sure what the largest deficit was but it was about that). We didn't get discouraged and found a way to win. Ok, that's about all the positives I can write... because it was a pretty bad game.
I know we didn't practice, but we returned four starters, and it sure didn't look like it. Our defense was horrible. Joe was bad. To me he looked slow, out of shape, and a bit chunky. He needs to hit the gym badly. It's not just that he was missing shots. I can live with that. But he played sloppy, slow, had his shots blocked, turned the ball over and played virtually no defense. If he can't get into game shape, I think JB will be forced to give minutes to Kadary, who quite honestly deserved to see more of the court.
Most of the guys seemed woefully out of shape. One might blame this on Covid, but I don't think so. Every team had to deal with that, not just SU. Even if you don't have access to a basketball hoop, you can jog/run in your own neighborhood. Guys were sucking wind in that first half when we pressed. Maybe the added weight is not muscle but from overeating?
Lastly, the concern is with Sidibe. I guess we don't know the extent of the injury but this guy can't get a break. I'm actually not suprised given his problems with his knees and surgery. He added weight, and maybe his frame just can't carry it. I hope that one of our other bigs can give us meaningful minutes. If not, that's a big red flag. We just haven't recruited bigs well in quite some time. I'm optimistic about Frank, but he's got to learn our system. It's going to take time. I'm expecting a lot of Marek at the 5. Yikes.
Ok, there ya have it... my game review and observations. Fingers crossed for a short learn curve for the young guys. LGO!
