Had to laugh. The two kids calling the game on WAER seemed clueless. Are these kids getting their money’s worth at Newhouse? Someone called in and asked “isn’t it 1-3-1?” And one of the two responded “whatever”.

Boeheim called it that...so take it up with him
maybe so, but that was likely a slip at the post-game press conference. These kids were saying it all throughout the game. TV announcers also said 1-3-1..as do most of our posters.

No, he specially said “its actually more of a 1-1-3“ when someone asked about the 1-3-1. I said 1-3-1 first as well...you are the one suggesting the waer guys don’t know what they are talking about, sounds like it might be you

Certainly looks more like a 1-1-3, buddy drops to the foul line, the forwards aren’t up even with him

They were actually playing the Flying V defence.

It's 1 1 1 down the middle. The forwards are running up and down the sideline. Sometimes it's 311, 131, 113. Or more likely, one forward is up top and the other is down low: 212.

Guess it really doesn't matter. Decently coached teams that watch the tape will get open shots, wherever the weakness happens to be. But at least, we won't be picked apart by anyone at the foul line, the main weakness of the 23.

They are just kids learning broadcasting. Doesn't mean they know anything about basketball.

I think the 1-1-3 “amoeba” is the closest to what we have run the last couple of games. I always thought the traditional 1-3-1 put one guard up top and the other running the baseline trapping and double teaming when the ball went anywhere near the baseline.

The key to the 1-1-3 or the 1-3-1, is that the guard up top has to force the action one way or the other and effectively cuts the court in half. You don’t have to defend sideline you sideline. When the offense tries skip passes to attacks the weak side, there are great steal and fast break opportunities.
