Hate it for the sport. IMO 6 is the correct number. The 1st round if neutral field should be fun to watch. Then it will be chalky which just delays the inevitable. Also it will be hard to find 12 worthy teams.

That being said we now have a chance to make the playoffs.

it further neuters the remaining bowl games not in this playoff. I wonder how it impacts the conferences now as a going concern. I would assume the conferences retain their auto bid no? If it's 12 at large then we probably are going to see 5-5 from the SEC/BIG and 2 from the rest

I’ve been all in on 6 since jump street.

And it appears us 6ers will die on that vine.

I hate it. #'s 8-12 will never win a championship. And probably not 6 or 7 either. And nor should they be able to play for one.

It's like the basketball tournament. Low seeds aren't winning a championship, and no one wants to cheer for them anyway after they make it to the Sweet 16. They just don't belong.

That hasn't been the case during the playoff era. Plus Oklahoma being in the SEC will hurt their record, as well as the records of the SEC teams. Conversely, Oklahoma being gone will help the B12 school records. Which will make it more likely that they get in.

2014-2021 (excluding 2020 as schedules were messed up)

B1G Champ
Made it all 7 years with a High #2 Low #6
#2 2021, #2 2019, #6 2018, #5 2017, #5 2016, #3 2015, #4 2014

SEC Champ
Made it all 7 years H #1 L #3
#1 2021, #1 2019, #1 2018, #3 2017, #1 2016, #2 2015, #1 2014

ACC Champ
Barely made it all 7 years H #1 L #12
#12 2021, #3 2019, #2 2018, #1 2017, #2 2016, #1 2015, #3 2014

B12 Champ (excluding Oklahoma)
Only made it 5 of 7 years. Although the 2 years they missed incoming UCF was Top 12 both years. H #5 L Out
#7 2021, #7 2019, #12 2016, #11 2015, #5 2014

P12 Champ (excluding USC)
Barely made it all 7 years H#2 L #11
#11 2021, #6 2019, #9 2018, #11 2017, #4 2016, #6 2015, #2 2014

Only made it 3 out of 7 years. That provides hope but at the same time they are losing the 2 schools who achieved those rankings.
#4 2021, #8 2018, #12 2017

Sure they will. When Alabama, Ohio State, or Clemson ever lose 2 games, they are in the playoff and can still win the NC.

Since losses do not matter anymore I wonder if the SEC would go to 10 conference games? I am sure ESPN would pony up to dump the FCS games for another in conference game.

I'm sure we'll see an #8, #9 or #10 win a title at some point. There have always been major conference, two loss teams that are cranking by the end of a season. Winning 3 games against peer programs is an entirely different dynamic than a low-seed basketball team needing to win 6 or 7.

Would you ever cheer for an 11 seed in the sweet 16?

And the age-old problem still remains. What about the 13th ranked team??
If you are the 13th-ranked team then you probably have at least three losses and therefore no one to blame but yourself for not being in the playoff.

IMO, 12 is perfect and it should never be more. The Top 4 get a bye and a reward for having a truly elite season.

By year the CFP Top 12 teams with 3 Ls:

2014: 4 teams
2015: 1 team
2016: 5 teams
2017: 1 team
2018: 4 teams
2019: 2 teams
2021: 1 team

Do we really need all of these 3 L teams in the playoffs? That is an average of 2.5 per year. In 2016 you nearly had half the playoff with 3 Ls.

Loses still matter. First seed still gets easiest path and home field. Professional teams still try to be the top seed because of this. It will be the same case here. Plus you may get better regular season matchups because a team can lose a game or 2 and still make it. Whenever their are more teams involved, the better the postseason is. Plus, this gives Syracuse a MUCH easier path to making the playoffs. Top 12 vs top 4 is extremely different. It doesn’t mean it will be easy for us, but makes it much more likely. Just for that alone it is a good idea. Any given Saturday.

Couple of questions

Are conference championship games gone?
How much are the players going to make?

Yesterday on ACC PM, the 12 game playoff, first round home game to higher seed, would bring in $500,000,000. Players would want a cut.

I rather see a multiple byes. Kind of like how the WCC does their BBall Tourney. That keeps the regular season relevant. It also means better games throughout the entire playoff.

1st Round
#7 vs #12
#8 vs #11
#9 vs #10

2nd
#4 vs #9/#10
#5 vs #8/#11
#6 vs #7/#12

3rd
#3 vs #6/#7/#12
#4/#9/#10 vs #5/#8/#11

Final Four
#1 vs...
#2 vs...

So #1 and #2 need to only win 2 games. #3 needs to win 3 games. #4-#6 need to win 4 games. #7-#12 need to win 5 games.

Well his take didn’t age well

Scores #1 vs #4
2014 35-42
2015 37-17
2016 24-7
2017 6-24
2018 45-34
2019 63-28
2020 31-14
2021 27-6

The only good game was the 1st one. Since then the 1 seed is 7-1 and the games haven't been close.
