12 Team Playoff Coming

This is just not true...4 seeds have won the playoff the same number of times as the 1 seed. Thats a fact.

It is also a fact that 6 of the last 7 #1 vs #4 have been easy wins for #1. You are moving the goal posts.

Now I had to look it up, so much for speaking off the cuff...

The first year a 4 won in tOSU, and the other 4 was 11-1 Bama for the 2017 season. Since they're Bama I just assumed a higher seed.

Georgia being a 3 over Michigan was ridiculous.

Still think 12 teams is just a blatant money grab and not competition based. Which is fine I guess...

Unless Notre Dame joins a conference the best seed they can get is #5 since the first 4 seeds for the highest ranked conference champions.

College Football Playoff expansion: Board agrees to 12-team field with aim to implement as soon as possible

Man the playoff seeding will be jacked up. This could make it actually harder for the #1 seed, brilliant!

So UGA last year is the #5 seed? Or even #6 seed to avoid playing Bama in the Final Four?

2021
1. #1 SEC Champ
2. #2 B1G Champ
3. #4 AAC Champ
4. #7 B12 Champ
So #3, #5, and #6 are seeded below #7.

2018
1. #1 SEC Champ
2. #2 ACC Champ
3. #4 B12 Champ
4. #6 B1G Champ
So #3 is now a 5 seed? Makes sense.

2016
1. #1 SEC Champ
2. #2 ACC Champ
3. #4 P12 Champ
4. #5 B1G Champ
So where does #3 go? If you give them #5, the #4 vs #5 will be B1G vs B1G.

The other years work out nicely.

This is so incredibly stupid.

3 and 4 have been getting boatraced by 1 and 2 in these playoffs seemingly all the way though.
That’s not the playoffs fault. The imbalance comes from a lack of parity - a problem no one works to solve.

A bigger pool of playoff teams with games that matter could help spread the wealth a bit more.

More is better. It’s entertainment. A bigger pool means more games that matter. Bowl games have lost value over time and are glorified scrimmages.

People are over thinking this. We used to all just decide who the best team was and probably got it right - but now we get meaningful games. Blowouts suck but whatever.

The "student-athlete" could practically play an NFL length schedule.

And my bad earlier 1-2 are 5 and 3 over 3 and 4.

Yahoo Sports: Conferences like the ACC and Pac-12 could also have been incentivized to expand the playoff sooner rather than later after the surprise move of USC and UCLA to the Big Ten earlier this summer. With the Big Ten and SEC poised to be the two most powerful Power Five conferences going forward, locking in a playoff format that includes a shot for everyone else seems like a wise move for all involved.
In the end, SEC poised to grab 4 wild cards and B1G get 2. But ACC should get 1 spot for the champion because ACC should be in the top 4 conferences in most of years.

College sports was the only American sport where the regular season actually mattered and wasn't a glorified preseason. This somewhat ends this especially for the big SEC programs. No I am not going to enjoy a 12 seed 3-4 loss SEC team 'upsetting' the 5 seed Pac 12 Big 12 or ACC champ on the road. Its gonna kind of suck.

The 12 team playoff completely saves the P12, B12, and ACC though. The Big Ten and SEC could have destroyed the other leagues if they wanted to and just had the winner of each play each other for the National Championship.

First round and Quarterfinals should have some decent games. Hopefully the SEC doesn't only lose when they play each other. NIL hasn't ruined college sports this won't but now when the marquee programs get upset its just NBD. They should limit each conference to 3 teams if they did that I would be onboard.

This is really good longterm for SU. Even if the ACC lost half of its teams, the conference can add 3 teams, get to a true round robin schedule, and still have the Champ make the playoffs. It wouldn't matter that Texas makes 10x as much money, we have easier access to the playoffs. So even if we get left behind, there is something to play for.
I wish it had gone to 16. Cant believe anyone on this board isnt thrilled with the expanded field.

Imagine SU basketball if the field hadnt been increased.

There is no sport where the regular season doesn't matter and is only a glorified pre-season. (Tell it to Mets and Braves fans.) I do think that pro sports tends to have too many playoff teams and that reduces the drama. But we still watch. You don't think Bills fans aren't pumped for their opener against the Rams?

It might take time, but could playoff expansion lead to more parity? The NCAA basketball tournament seems like it has more upsets than ever before (but maybe that’s just my memory skewed to recent data points). Granted, it took a while to get to that point.

I don’t follow this close enough. Does 12 help Notre dame in any way? If so I hate expansion to 12
Thankfully yes. It will allow ND to remain independent and keep their agreement with the ACC which is very good for SU.

It is good for SU and bad for the sport. I 110% want to see a 12th seeded ACC Champ SU. I 110% hate the thought of a 12th seeded ACC Champ Pitt.

Aye - the only sport where its champion was named by sportswriters. That was dumb.

More games vs good teams is a good thing, even if the ending is the same. I agree about a conference cap.

Hate it for the sport. IMO 6 is the correct number. The 1st round if neutral field should be fun to watch. Then it will be chalky which just delays the inevitable. Also it will be hard to find 12 worthy teams.

That being said we now have a chance to make the playoffs.

Why should teams get byes?
The obvious number is 8 teams, 3 rounds.

It will be interesting to see how attendance plays out over time, especially for teams that are regulars in the playoffs. 2 games to travel to is already a lot, and expensive.

3 neutral site games (and potentially 4 games in total) will be VERY tough

Yeah, if you're doing more than 8, you go to 16. If the reasoning for not going 16 is the length of the playoffs or that there aren't 16 teams that are good enough, 12 doesn't make sense either.

I wonder if using neutral sites where two games could be played in one day would help attendance. I don't see that happening though. They'll be more worried about TV ratings.

And their fans that have been posting here and on other boards I've visited have all said that's perfectly fine with them. As #5, they'd host a 1st round game and then play #4 in a bowl game. Right now as #5 they'd be in the Orange Bowl against the best ACC team not in the playoff or the Fiesta Bowl since, IIRC, that game hosts two at-large teams. With this expansion, it's very hard for me to imagine a situation arising that causes ND to want to change the status quo with the ACC. I would say they got exactly what they wanted.

They can never be ranked in top four. Only conference champions.

They can be ranked top 4. They just can't get a top 4 seed in the playoff.
If ND is undefeated going into the playoff, they'll be ranked in the Top 4, likely #1 or #2. But, as sufandu says, they'll be the #5 seed and will host a 1st round game. Playoff seeding and ranking in the AP and USA Today polls are totally independent of each other.
