12 Team Playoff Coming

If you are using 1998, then Louisville is another.

Poor Temple got left behind. I believe they are the only one to lose status from 1998. But if you go to the BCS in general, you can add UConn and USF to the list.
Thanks for the catch. I forgot than the 62 lost one (Temple) so it was 7 additions to the "haves".

I don't think Clemson beating UNC, who is on a 2 game losing streak, will get them to jump anyone but Penn State. I think Utah with a loss is out. Not sure why they jumped so high from last week. As if the weird P12 tie breaker has meaning. Why are they ahead of Washington, or even Oregon for that matter? Which means FSU maybe sneaks in. Are you taking a 4 L team ahead of them?

You're probably right about Clemson. I was thinking the committee will value the conference champ tag over idle teams and assume they destroy UNC...8 is a solid spot.

I'm strictly just moving teams up from the current CFP rankings. 11 Utah isn't ahead of 10 Washington in my scenario...

Oregon is at 16. I see no way they get in.

12 Tulane at 5 Ohio State
11 KSU/FSU? at 6 Alabama
10 Washington at 7 Tennessee
9 Penn State at 8 Clemson

A team like Cincy would make the 12 team playoff so that is a silly argument. The teams you are advocating for aren't even Top 40 teams. Also after the next round of expansion it gets worse as the good G5 are becoming P5.

A team like 8 seed Penn State has zero chance of winning at UGA. You want to have Ohio play at UGA why? The backups will be in for the 2nd Q. And yes Ohio playing at SU would be a game we should win 99% of the time.

How do you fit 8 playoff games into a weekend? You do not want games starting at the same time. The best you can do is...

Friday 7:15 and 9:00
Saturday 12:15, 2:00, 3:45, 5:30, 7:15, 9:00

That way when the earlier game is starting the 3rd Q, the later is starting its game. FCS doesn't have that issue because no one watches those games. There isn't big TV money. NFL doesn't have that issue as they have 3 games Saturday and 3 games Sunday with no overlap.

I don't like byes so I'm a 4-8-16 guy. The other divisions have 24-32 team playoffs so FBS can have a 16-team playoff. Each game doesn't have to have a time slot to itself.

Just go to 16 and use the bowls as the playoff locations. 16+8+4+2+1=31.
The bowls would make more money from TV and fans at the games.

What is wrong with a bye? It reward teams. You like randomness in your champions? That is the worst way to crown a true champ.

This is all about money. A network would want games but not all at the same time. You won't get the same size contract. Other divisions no one cares, so it isn't a factor. FBS is about money not fairness and giving everyone a shot.

Why do you want to see Ohio at UGA so bad? No one wants to see that. It will have poor ratings and the networks will not want to pay a premium for that. It is a waste of everyone's time. Heck the 8/9 winner vs UGA is a waste of time. Do we really want viewers to only tune in to close games? Because the matchups prior to the semis mostly stink.

I'd be stunned if we didn't see an #8/#9 seed take down a #1 within the first 3 years of the new format. #1 teams lose all the time in the regular season, I'm certain there will be a 2-loss #8 seed that gets scorching hot in November that pulls off the upset.

Another weird scenario is UGA loses to LSU and one of TCU/USC loses. That means UGA goes from #1 to #5 and Clemson/K State/Utah move up to 4.
You could also look at it as all of the P5 conference championo games are worthwhile to watch for the first time. You can debate if it’s too much weight, but it makes the conference championship a lot more relevant.

IMO if #1 is an SEC team, I can't see them losing. If #8 is an SEC team vs a non SEC #1, they can win.

Just looking at the prior years...

2022 Penn State/Clemson vs UGA
2021 Ole Miss/Okie State vs Bama
2019 Wiscy/Florida vs LSU
2018 UCF/Washington vs Bama
2017 USC/Penn State vs Clemson
2016 Wiscy/USCvs Bama
2015 ND/FSU vs Clemson
2014 Michigan State/Ole Miss vs Bama

Besides 2017 Clemson, I don't think we see a potential loss. The gap in talent and coaching is too large. You need a flawed #1 or a sneaky #8.
