That's when Bobby Bowden had his players spear Bill Hurley in the opener. We spent the rest of the year with Tim Wilson at QB, which is like having a halfback at quarterback.

Not really a fair year to compare. Was more a case of noodle-arm than meathead: after Hurley went down there wasn't anybody ready and able to throw the ball. Tom Coughlin was OC that year and Art Monk was on hand, if only the forward pass was a possibility. The most pleasant surprise was a freshman RB cracking 1000 yards, and he went on to set the SU career record for rushing yards.
