2/22/2015 First Day of Spring Practice

Stephen Bailey ‏@Stephen_Bailey1
Shafer: Syracuse sophomore DB Antwan Cordy will work at both CB and S during the spring. No others moving to safety.

Luke Arciniega is working out at defensive end, Shafer said. Still waiting to hear on NCAA waiver for sixth season of eligibility.

Ivan Foy is working out at both tackle spots. No other updates on the offensive line.

Shafer: Zaire Franklin is practicing at MLB, Marqez Hodge at WIL, Parris Bennett/Jonathan Thomas at SAM.

Shafer expects JUCO signee Ted Taylor to compete with Bennett and Thomas for that strong-side LB spot in preseason camp.

Shafer: Ashton Broyld and Ervin Philips will be versatile, lining up in the slot, on the wing and in the backfield. Both could see carries.

Shafer emphasized those carries will be more than jet sweep/horizontal motions. Depth in backfield will allow downhill runs.

Shafer said WR Alvin Cornelius had a very strong practice. Also noted TE Trey Dunkelberger and LB Marqez Hodge among strong performers.

Shafer said Syracuse won't put on pads until its third practice of spring ball.

Shafer said Syracuse is very healthy entering spring practice. Mentioned safety Rodney Williams taking it easy to start.

Shafer said redshirt senior linebacker Oliver Vigille had two interceptions in practice today.

Shafer said QB Terrel Hunt looked sharp. Threw a nice deep ball on a wheel route and connected with Dunkelberger a few times.

Shafer said Omari Palmer continues to work at guard and tackle. There'll be a lot of experimenting on the OL this spring.

Well hopefully the same NCAA official that worked John Raymon's case isn't working Arciniega. He'll hear about half way through the season then.

Just got back from Shafer's 1st spring football presser. Insinuated that he had a full roster today with some players working into things.

Small notes on defense: Cordy working at both safety/cornerback and Franklin/Hodge sound like solidified LBs with strong side up in the air.

Liking the move to put Arciniega at DE. Also, think this linebacker corps is the most talented we have had in a while. Just don't think Taylor is going to be able to compete with Bennett and Thomas though. And our D-Line is going to be huge this year, we should have another very solid year of great run defense and should have a good pass rush this year.

This is what I feel like... I can finally see the light.

Offensively this is when (I hope) they look at the personnel and tailor a style to fit what SU has. So often last year it looked so forced and awkward.

My guess on the OL is:

Foy--Palmer--Trudo--Robinson--Ward. something like that. Spring hope is here! Let's get back to a bowl game and go from there!

From what I have been told he next practice will be Tuesday AND it will be open to the media for the first 20 minutes. So a little change there.

Sorry I was typing to quickly...all practices will be closed to media and public.

That really helped us win games last year

Yeah CL, type slower so SU has a better chance to win!

"has" present tense, "did" past tense

Maybe you missed the period between the word yes and Syracuse did. 2 different points But with a quick google check, here's a couple

From the article -"All practices are open to the public and will be held at the Kajikawa practice fields, adjacent to the practice bubble." In spite of having open practices, ASU was pretty good last year.

Would it be nice to be able to watch practice?

Of course.

But with a program under the gun, a HC coach on the hot seat and a new OC and new offensive system being installed, I can understand why Shafer wants practices closed right now.

Don't forget the tools covering it, who would like nothing more than to stir up more controversy and harm the program. I hope they have a restraining order keeping them 5 miles from the facility.

Bring back Webb and Rahme.

Didn't miss the period. Did you do you're google search before or after answering the previous question? If it was after, then you obviously didn't know that other schools had it open and were responding with what we did in the past. It's good to know that 1.5% of major college football teams have open spring practice.

1.5%? That settles it! Throw the damn doors open!

not to be picky, but we are practicing in a place that really has limited facilities for people to watch anyway. I wonder if we were outside if they would have the same policy?
