The zone as a full time defense is dead. The game has evolved. There are too many deep shooters. The corners can’t pinch on the baseline like they used to. Covering the wings and the bounce pass from the high post is impossible. We get extended far too much. The principle was to get shooters a step out of their comfort zone. Now everyone practices from 25 feet. In the beginning you couldn’t win with the zone was the conventional wisdom. Boeheim created a defense which was ingenious. No more.

The zone is the 2nd biggest reason we won this game. Richmond couldn’t get consistent looks for the last 10 minutes of game time.

Everyone can say whatever they want about the zone the last couple of years and it’s warranted. But tonight, wasn’t why it was close. Richmond had about six absolute prayer low percentage threes go in. The reason why we won is because they kept chucking nonsense and eventually their luck and prayers to their devil spider god ran out. Made about one in the last ten minutes of play. Rebounding and some bad offense was why it was close. Zone not the issue tonight.

Good win.

There is enough length to have it be effective. Young guys need to improve in execution. It shut Richmond down the last 7 minutes.

they had 4-5 baskets because balls just bounced around off people just right and 2 of those guys looked to be out of bounds when they touched it.

What is Richmond’s season average from beyond the arc?

we gave up 71 pts with an OT.. if we do that we should win. Get out rebounded by 18 was the issue all night.

We often get out-rebounded. The key is to keep it to no more than 10.

Then, steals, blocked shots, clock violations, etc. give us extra possessions that make up for (some, but not all) of a shortfall on the boards.

As long as we are getting offensive boards, and 2nd chance points, I can live with a modest deficit overall.

They went 11 of their first 21 from 3. When they didn’t they were dropping down for lay ups. We won. It isn’t length and it isn’t rotations. Everyone knows how to beat it and deep shooting is killing us. Rebounding? You DO know that one of the common problems with the zone is rebounding? Plus 3’s yield long rebounds. We were in n the right track playing more man. Maybe it will get more play against a team that doesn’t run the Princeton offense.

I haven’t posted on here in years!
During the first couple of scrimmages I was super excited to hear that they would be playing some man this year and they looked pretty good playing it! Sadly the last 3 games they have played almost 100% zone playing into the strengths of the smaller, slower and better shooting teams! Hopefully they start clicking on offense because it will be another long season!

27 points off turnover and SU outscored Richmond in second chance points 13-9.

rebounding out of the zone still means you have to be the right spot when the ball comes down.. Every year we have a team of guys who watch the ball instead of anticipating the ball.

we got 25% of the shots we shot and went 50-50 on the shots they took. if we got that to 30% and 40/60 thats about 10 shot change.. Thats not asking a ton. But watch the game and see how many we didnt get when we were in the right spots.. One of the key spots in the game Benny gets a simple put back and bricks it.. Edwards probably lost 5 by himself because he doesnt time it well and cant hold onto it.

Could we bring in a rebounding guru? Our players just don’t typically have that rebounding mentality. Roberson did at times and when he was interested he could rebound at a high level out of the zone. There’s something more than the defense causing the rebounding woes that persist year after year.

we turned them over 18 times with that zone and protected our shot blocker.

JB doesn’t really care about rebounds. He says he does, but he doesn’t coach like he does, and that’s the proof.

I don’t get the obsession over the rebounding number. To me the only number that matters is second chance points and Richmond had nine.
The extra possessions can wear a defense down but the rebounding really wasn’t a huge factor last night it was just a number.
