2013 NYC DE

Forget NYC. Not worth the effort.

Sent from my DROIDX

That's crazy. Pure demographics says you are going to be 5 to 10 BCS quality athletes coming out of NYC every year.

Issues are:

1. Probably need at least two years of coaching before they are really ready to hit the field.
2. Behind in S&C training.
3. Qualifying.

Just because SU has been forced to throw kids into the mix that aren't ready doesn't equal "not worth the effort".

That's about as short sighted as it gets.

not many schools, but that doesn't mean there aren't some gems there. there HAS to be talent there. it is a matter of marrone finding them. i cant see SU laying the necessary $$ to go and hire a hot recruiter in a great area.

i agree with bees, we can find better talent around the state. when's the last time a kid from the city really blew up the way mike hart did? yeah there's ray rice, but the rest of the state, especially buffalo and rochester seems to produce the same amount of talent. we have decent connections in florida, georgia, and ohio so why don't we hire a recruiter that can bring the talent in from there? let's be honest, new york football is a joke compared to most other states.

We have great contacts in NYC/LI, why would we ignore them??? Easy to get there from Syracuse. Built in fanbase..Great Athletes.. Produces NFL players..Here's a few NFL players from NYC/LI area:

KEITH BULLOCK-SUFFERN NY -hmmm where did he play college ball????
STEVE GREGORY...Art Monk was from White plains
D'Bricksaw Ferguson
Lyle Alzado
Chris Baker- TE for 8 yrs
Marco Battaglia
Terrel Brown- went to Un. Texas
Chris Canty- plays for the Giants- went to UVA
John Elliott- played 14 years for the Giants and the Jets
Jay Fielder
Boomer Esiason

And one of my all time NFL Favorites - Art Donovan

Here's the link...the list is a mile long with NFL players from NYS- comb through it and find all the kids from NYC/LI area on it. .

http://www.databasefootball.com/players/player_bystate.htm?state=NY

There are a ton of them. Anyone who thinks we shouldn't recruit NYC/LI is nuts.

And we had a guy who was recruiting western NY/PA...

Playing word games?:) Joking joking...I was responded to the other post, not yours...but

Google wouldn't let me comb out the NYS kids...
You can go through and find the NYC kids and limit it to the 5 boroughs...
There are a bunch of them too

Gregory was NYC
Ferguson was NYC
Vinnie Testaverde NYC
Battaglia is Queens
Brown is NYC
Ronnie Harmon is Queens
Vernon Hayes- Bronx- UGA and Pitts Steelers in the 2000's
Clarence Jones- Un. MD- played in the 90's in the NFL for 9 years- Brooklyn
Rob Moore- Queens
John Mackey- NYC..hehehhee
Ogunleye- Brooklyn
Truluck- Brooklyn

To name a few

not short sighted at all. would rather spend the time and monet elsewhere. target a couple key guys and move on. what other school goes all out in nyc?

By the way...looking at this years class and last years class, and using NYC as your starting point (not LI or surrounding areas)

We have one NYC commit- Alvin Cornelius and we are waiting on one more Wayne Morgan

Last years class was Brandon Reddish, Terrell Hunt from NYC.

If you are saying we are going all out in NYC, I don't see it from the last two classes...

Ferguson played HS football at Freeport, as did Clifton Smith and Morlon Greenwood. Freeport is in Long Island. Alzado played at Lawrence HS on LI. Clarence Jones played at Central Islip. Testaverde was also from LI (Sewanhaka), as was Rob Moore (Hempstead), John Mackey (also Hempstead), Don McPherson (West Hempstead), Rob Carpenter (Memorial HS in Amityville) and Jim Brown (Manhasset). Long Island has also produced Boomer Esiason (East Islip), Jumbo Elliott Sachem), Sean Farrell (Southhampton), Ron Heller (Farmingdale), John Tice and Mike Tice (Central Islip), Seth Joyner (Spring Valley) Jay Fiedler (Oceanside), Todd Sauerbrun (Ward Melville), Amos Zereoue and many other fine football players.

You could make a strong argument that it would be smarter for SU to scrap recruiting NYC completely and focus on LI based on past history. Personally, I would continue to recruit both.

Any other BCS teams in NYS?

It makes all the sense in the world to emphasize working a territory with that shear number of prospects where you have a natural competitive advantage.

Hmmm...a website error then on some of those..The site lists Vinnie as Brooklyn, Moore and Mackey as Queens...

Who said that they aren't recruiting the rest of the state? There is the more players from Florida than there has been in over 10 years. BTW we are recruiting Ga.

I don't think those are errors. I believe you are looking at birthplace rather than high school attended.

Where you live and where you play in high school may be 2 different places. Especially in nyc where there are a lot of private schools in close proximity.

Or operator error at 6:00 am before he had a few cups of coffee in him...Maybe we should start recruiting the hospitals in NYC

Some others on the roster that Marrone recruited: Foy, Tull, Rene and Kobena and I think Bromley. Also Cater and Ishaq and hopefully Wayne Williams.

Cater- LI
Ishaq was 5 stars we better be all over him

I missed Foy from last years class

Kobena, Tull and Rene were NYC

we have gone 4 kids 2010 class (Bromley, Kobena, Rene & Tull),
3 kids 2011 class (Foy, Reddish & Hunt) and
1 kid 2012 class (Cornelius with Morgan still being recruited)

I think thats right

Yeah, every year there are a couple of consensus picks out of nyc that we should be all over. And several guys that are as good as any upstate kids. I guess the question is are we spending more time recruiting nyc than we should. Personally, I don't think that is the issue as much as we are still trying to establish recruiting connections in other fertile areas.

You have to recruit what you know for the most part... I am not saying its the best territroy but we should certainly try to get the best talent wherever we can and with Marrone and Aselmo I would say NYC is our best best of ever landing some real blue chips, too late for buyer's remorse at this point. You just don't pick up and change an approach that has been in place for 3 years now, we shall see if this is succesful in year 4 and probably 5. It's Marrone's plan and will either work or it won't but you can't abandon ship, that is even worse.

If there are good players in NYC, Marrone should recruit them. One thing about NYC is that there are, no doubt, athletes that could play football, that are playing basketball instead. If they lived in FL, they might be playing football and being recruited by the top schools... but they are playing basketball. It's up to Marrone to find these diamonds.
