Mind boggling what has become of Herkimer. They were the OCC of the late 80s and early 90s. Competing with D3 schools and giving some D1 schools a run during fall ball games. Now they get beat by 34.

When the final buzzer sounded, the first person that Wilbur found was Staats’ cousin Jerry, a freshman defender, who also won top defensive player of the tournament, meaning the Staats family swept the awards on both sides of the ball.

Jerry was in tears when he and Wilbur found each other. The two embraced and Jerry tucked his head into Wilbur’s neck. Next year, Jerry Staats will follow in his family’s footsteps and play for Syracuse University next season.

“I told you we’d get you to Syracuse,” Wilbur said. “I knew you’d get there.”

As the two hugged and Staats cried into Wilbur, chaos ensued in the background among the rest of Staats’ teammates. They ran up and down the field jumping and screaming. Some jumped over the fence into the stands.
