2019 Yankees Thread...

Okay, if Stanton is out until August, we must be trading Frazier. I get wanting him to play daily in Scranton, but he would play a lot for the Yankees too. I know his fielding is not good.

Why is it a guy capable of earning that much money doing the most difficult thing in sports, can't learn how to slide into a base without hurting himself? Am I the only one who sees this?

I can't totally agree with you there. Do you feel the same way when Gardner slides head first into first base?

When you either hit a HR or strike out, there aren’t a lot of opportunities to work on your slide.

Sliding headfirst into first base is one of the dumbest plays in baseball. You don't get there faster, and only expose yourself to all kinds of injury. I get infuriated every time Gardner does that.

In little league you can automatically be called out if you slide head first advancing. Was a big source of controversy in one of my son’s little league games this season.

Seems like a smart rule. I understand why it's done into other bases, but believe even that should be limited to higher levels of baseball.

I know the contract makes it near impossible but I wouldn't mind them trying to ship Stanton out. See ya don't need ya.

One reason is to avoid a sweep tag.

That's normally not why Gardner does it. He generally has made up his mind to do it and has committed to it before he has any idea where the throw may be. There's a reason you don't see many players do it; it's a dumbass play with no upside.

Gardner would disagree and would tell you he can show you on a computer sliding gets him to first quicker. Of course at the end of the running he slows down, but the ability to reach out for the bag makes up for it in his opinion. And he’s done all kinds of video timing and modeling himself. He’s convinced of it.

I'd like to see his analysis. It would seem running through the bag is the fastest way there. I don't see how gathering yourself to throw your body forward and down from a full sprint (and then having to find the bag with your hand) gets you there sooner.

John Kruk used to say that if sliding was faster you'd sure see some exciting finishes to the 100 yard dash.

Followed the Yankees forever. Fundamentals are not something they value it seems.

Well, I've never advocated sliding into first. How many times has Gardner put himself on the IL(?) by sliding like an abject Little League rookie? Anyway, I don't think that's an apt comparison, not only because 1.) Stanton got hurt sliding into third, and 2.) Gardner's game is to get on base and scrap for runs and he's been doing it for a decade or more. Stanton's game on the bases is the HR trot. Face it, Gardy has a much better idea what he's doing out there. And, FWIW, Gardner is not only an better base runner, but he's also a better outfielder than Stanton. I have no argument with you, really, but no matter how you slice it, Gardner is playing and contributing while Stanton is not.

Sometimes I wonder whether these injuries come from the fact players don't regularly work out and are vulnerable that way. Or maybe they're so finely trained and tuned that even the smallest of contusions or strains can take them out. Baseball is a funny game that way. You can stand in the outfield for three innings and do nothing more strenuous than jog in and out, and then you have to explode from a dead standstill to an outright sprint chasing a hit down, and sometimes turn and throw the ball as hard as you can. And throwing a ball like baseball players do is not a natural motion. Only baseball players can do it. Maybe it's just the nature of the game that way and there's only so much you can do? Anyway, the routine susceptibility to injuries is a big reason I no longer play fantasy baseball. It's too frustrating.
