The portal is free agency. If you think of this like pro sports you understand that if you want a quick fix it doesn't always immediately come through the draft (hs recruiting). It's often a mix.

He transferred to S Alabama for the 2020-2021 season but opted out. Haven’t heard anything since. Hope all is going well for him. He went through so much and came through it, can’t help cheering
for him regardless what he decides is his future. Determined young man.

Not sure where to post it but I found it interesting.

Somebody in another thread, said what coach uses the portal where they might recruit over their HS kids? Because we cant do that with our incoming kids, and I kinda get that but...

He then has 4 transfers coming in! Thats 10 players!

Then it gets interesting, he only has 5 seniors, and 1 transfer out that I heard, Vanover the 7 ft 3 center. So where are the other 4 spots? Crazy

The point is he's coming off an Elite 8 where you think you want continuity. Yet he seems to just be looking to upgrade at every roster spot.

FWIW, right now they are the oddsmakers way to early favorites to win it all next year.

I think Alleyne is the final holdover from buzz... if they can get both Mutts and Aluma to stay (haven't heard anything about either?) they'll be really good - starting backcourt of Padulla/Catoor and Maddox on the wing

I think this is way over the top.

Jimmy used the portal last year and got Cole, Jimmy and Symir. Last year was more about roster makeup, who we lost and too many similar players but those transfer additions were fine. We were not going to get a big time guard unless they were promised a starting spot and that wasn't happening last year.

Name me a forward you think we should have got and would have made a difference vs Cole and Jimmy?

This year we will have one roster spot and will likely get a backup center via the portal. Which we absolutely need?

What ese should we do this year besides kicking JBA and Chaz off the team?

It’s not over the top. I’d be sympathetic to JB’s plight if it hadn’t been 7 or 8 straight seasons of not being a top 25 team during the regular season or finishing in the top 4 or 5 of the ACC. JB needs to get this program back to that status and off the bubble grind. That’s his job. No excuses. Not mining the portal is coaching malpractice, imo, and I think many people agree with me. We need an experienced proven forward. If that means finding a new landing spot for JBA or Chaz at a lower level, so be it. He’s done it in the past when we needed the roster space. His failure at roster construction a year ago has been well documented. The result was the first losing season in 53 years for the program. That’s an unacceptable result. Why are you making excuses?

not excuses, last year unacceptable and we can all agree. you are making multiple arguments in one post that started with not using the portal is coaching malpractice.

What I am saying is it is not due to "not mining the portal". the roster construct was bad. having too many similar players was bad. Joe and Buddy as the guards was problematic. 4 not very good defenders was not good.

Last year was the first year of the portal and we did as well as we could. Lost two key players and a usful sub and replaced with as good as we could get.

This year we have one spot open. We cant only have Jesse at center and Carey can not be counted on due to injuries and need for strength. Therefore a backup center is what is needed and we are working on it.

The portal is not the reason for 6 straight mediocre results (I will not say 7 since we went to the Final Four then). Recruiting, roster construction, roster retainment and playing time distribution should all be open for critique. However, I think we have been fine with the portal so far.

Again who would have been a better forward pick up last year than the two we signed?
