2023 Horse Racing

Can be really brutal. I have been alright at Saratoga but those Friday- Sunday cards at Del Mar have cooked me. Been horrible there, really bad. Can't even get spread races right most times.

Sold a horse that I bred at the Saratoga NY yearling sale last week. Was a lot of fun. She looks like she has a ton of potential but she's a little crazy. I don't like crazy. Horse was born about 1 mile down the road from me outside of Ithaca, shipped her to a farm outside of Saratoga about 6 months later. I hated to see her go but had to recoup some cost for a couple of horses that are now polo horses in Skaneateles. :):)
The money at Del Mar for me has been those horses, jocks, and trainers from the Los Al night races in the cheaper claiming races. Been killing it for me in the Pick4/5

Some wild prices out there for sure, have to imagine the pick 4/5 bets have paid rather well. I haven't even stuck in long enough to be able to look at possible will pays. I tend to handicap the races in reverse order because I have found myself getting lazy early on and then forcing a single later on in ane effort to keep the cost of my ticket down. Sure, you tend to hang in longer when you spread early but the chances of overall success certainly don't increase. Most pick 5's which I like to play for $1-$2, if I can't find a single I like, I usually won't play them.

Brutal at SAR, more rain...have to think they will pull most if not all off turf tomorrow with all the deaths

Gonna take a run at the 2 day pick 6 at Saratoga beginning with the Personal Ensign today, and concluding with the Travers tomorrow. Looks pretty chalky to me, so hoping that a horse like Scotland in the Travers and Soldier Rising in the Sword Dancer might add some value.

For the first time ever I am enjoying Del Mar over the Spa. And not just because I am doing better there.

Not one horse on dirty coming from the back or even the middle of the pack yet. All front runners or horses stalking real close...THEN the rain just hit. We’ll see if that changes the dirt course

Holy cow. This is officially a dumpster fire. Not good.

So Belmont definitely going to Toga the next two years? Mile and a quarter not half?

Pretty much all but signed on the dotted line. Here is a great recap of the Saratoga meet. Attendance up and Handle down. No surprise due to the rain factor.

I see hotels are ramped up and getting booked already..

the next step is for the Preakness to move its date back a week and the Belmont to do it as well to get the better horses to stay racing

All the uproar about relocating the Belmont Stakes weekend to Saratoga for 2 years is ridiculous. There will be no racing at Belmont Park those two years because of the clubhouse being completely rebuilt. What else are they suppose to do? Aqueduct can't handle the crowd because the casino that is now there. Saratoga the only answer. Racing has much bigger issues than the Belmont being run at 1-1/4. Will be fun weekend in June up there.

Why does it have to be run at 1 1/4? for a two time thing why couldnt they build a short chute at the end and let that race finish past normal finish line? could at least make it 1 3/8 i would think

you could also start in the back shoot and finish on the back if they had to.

Who knows by the time this happens they may not even be running on dirt anymore as well if the synthetic talk is true

they ran it at a 1 1/8 for covid just a few years ago.

not sure I have ever seen a 1-1/2 mile distance at Saratoga, I know they have the 1-3/4 distance for the Birdstone stake. Not sure they want to make the Belmont stakes at Saratoga a 3 turn race either. They will never finish a Grade 1 or any race for that matter on the backside of a track either. Wait until they run the Met Mile out of that chute at Saratoga, can already hear the complaining

Not sure what to make of the synthetic talk, do they add it as a 3rd surface or just get rid of dirt? No idea but it's coming at some point. Horse racing loves to put band aid fixes on stuff, this would be another one, IMO. Maple Leaf Mel was a tragedy, NY Thunder was another misuse of injections by a trainer with a horrible track record, another cheat from Gulfstream/ Momouth. They should suspend him for 2 years.

All that said, horses will always get hurt regardless even with clean trainers and guys/gals with great track records.

The HISA stuff has been rolling out and while they have good intentions how it's being enforced and overseen has been pretty much a disaster so far. Hopefully, they can get this figured out sooner rather than later.

Belmont has been run at several distances over the years all the way to 1 5/8 too

do it whatever they want for the next 2 yrs and bring back the 1 1/2 for the 100 yr anniversary.

I agree 100% when it goes back to Belmont, has to be the 1.5 miles. I actually look forward to the Saratoga version of the Belmont Stakes.

Will be heading to Santa Anita for the Breeders Cup in a couple of weeks, and looking forward to it. Classic seems wide open.

Lots of hype for the Japanese horse in the Classic

It's only a matter of time. Japanese horses have won a lot of big races internationally past couple years. Not a great field either. Who is the best US horse? archangelo?

Well, depending on what Dutrow is doing to him/putting in him, could be White Abrarrio

Yes - I keep trying to find a way to consider White Abarrio, but he seems like a money burner. Reminds me of Sea Hero who I won and lost a fair amount of money on as he came up big every once in a while and then followed up by soiling the bed in between.

Sea Hero, btw lived to be 29 years old and sired near 700 foals, so I guess he had the last laugh - although he wound up far away from the blue grass in Turkey according to Wikipedia.

Yeah I think people will bet White Abarrio off the last race which will be 3 months from the actual breeders cup. Amazing how these guys go from Saratoga and train to the breeder's cup at this point. His race in the whitney while impressive was kind of easy trip. Gets the lead goes basically 24/48/112 on the front end with no pressure. Nobody went after him and most were looking at Cody's wish who was empty that day

Horse goes from Saffie to Dutrow. I hate to say it but I think Dutrow is cleaner than old Saffie.

It's probably the year to take a shot on one of these foreign horses.

Arcangelo out for the Breeders? Anyone offering free insight on some of Saturday's action?
