Do we know if his firing is due to actual on-court performance and not other stuff?
Sounds like purely on the court which is wild considering how bare Pitino left Iona just 2 years ago and Anderson won 12 conference games this year. They already have a replacement lined up

The AD's statement read that it has to do with the changing landscape of NIL, and repositioning the program for success in the future. Nothing to do with performance, but I'm not sure how they could have fired him if they won the game on Saturday.

Supposedly Mick Cronin is in the running for the Nova job with a current $15M buyout that drops to $10M at the end of the month. If true, we've got Nova willing to spend $10M for the buyout, probably $6-7M salary or so, plus whatever it cost to dump Neptune. Another coach linked to them is Chris Collins, with 4 years left on his Northwestern deal.

And we continue to rolle with the worst coach in P5, likely because of a buyout. Buy hey, our NIL funds are going to be higher this year!

As I have said all along, the buyout is merely an excuse... regardless of how absurd it might be for someone so unqualified.

If true, we've got Nova willing to spend $10M for the buyout, probably $5M salary or so, plus whatever it cost to dump Neptune. Kind of feel like that’s a meh hire for them. Cronin always seems to fall just short and was wearing out his welcome in UCLA.

Willard too

There will be no splash hires. SU needs to show administrative and significant $$$ support to be relevant. The splash SU needs is players people want to pay to go see. Simple as that. Players that want to be at SU.

I agree there will be no splash hire. That's on the list of reasons why I believe Syracuse is on the path to becoming DePaul levels of relevancy in hoops.

Syracuse needs to uncover every possible revenue source to be able to pay players. One way to do that is to get fans excited about the new coach with a splash hire. Instead, we'll hire a borderline no-name and the administration will whine fans need to step up because we don't have the resources to compete. The splash hire could provide the $$$ we need to get the players fans can get excited about - so that's obviously not the way Syracuse will choose to proceed.

Their fans aren’t happy about his firing thinking it was a big booster or two who got him fired. They are sick and tired of starting all over again with a new coach, losing players some because of poaching, others because of the coaching changes, poaching of their coaches, and just don’t like the overall general state of college basketball.

Pitino took 4 of the Iona players to St John’s and others just transferred. Anderson had to restart his first year with 11 new players and this was just his second year. Strange.

He made the Bubble F4 but I agree. Mick has just never seemed happy at UCLA. More recently he complained about the frequent travel and lost his house in the wildfires which couldn't have helped him emotionally/mentally.

I could even see him forking over some of his own money for the buyout instead of putting VU (or whoever) on the hook for all of it if that's what it takes.

I've never particularly cared for him watching on TV, but I would take him in a heartbeat if it was ever possible here before taking a flyer on a young guy.

I agree that Cronin is not happy in the current spot. I think Nova would be lucky to get him. Fits better back East.

Both Cronin at UCLA and Musselman at USC are not happy with the B1G travel and now much harder it will be for them to win big in the B1G. Look for both to have new jobs by next season or the year after.

It's all about the NIL. As someone who follows the MAAC, and especially Siena and Iona, I am shocked. But, you have to dance and you need to catch the big fish.

That said, Iona has historically been the most successful MAAC program, but some of their alumni live in a dream world.

Coaching is not for the faint of heart.
