2024-25 NBA Season

Watching ESPN, speculation is the Mavs have a lot of concerns about Luka’s conditioning resulting in a lot of his injuries and they have to give him a 5 yr $350 million contract this summer or Luka turns that down and goes to free agency. Mavs chose this route instead. Shocking there is so much doubt about a 25 year old perennial MVP/All-NBA candidate. Will be interesting to see how this shakes out going forward.
the downside of this deal is absolutely HUGE for Dallas. the upside is capped. id honesty rather just let him walk if it came to it rather than hitch my wagon to Davis for 3 years.

I still don't agree with the package they chose, but that speculation does lay out a good foundation / rational reason as to why Dallas decided to move on.

I can see the rationale for moving him.

But it seems like they are doing a trade that keeps them the most competitive as possible now. Trying to stay a 45-50 win team with no real playoff ambitions makes no sense.

If you make the tough decision to deal Doncic, then start over from scratch with a massive haul of futures, to kick start the rebuild process. Rip the bandaid. Sort of like OKC did with PG and Westbrook at the end of 2019.

you could probably get more teams involved in the offseason and drive up the price. this makes no sense. The only reason to do it right now is because Cuban is delusional enough to think with Davis Mavs are instant contenders. This assumes he is healthy which he rarely is for long periods of time. This assumes they are actually a Davis away. This assumes Kyrie doesnt convert to a hermit crab or something.

I get the Mavs actually. His game will age great but his body is a mess and if he was going to embrace conditioning he would have years ago.
Not sure the return was worth it which makes my conspiracy gene think the league was involved.
I wonder what LBJ said to AD.

Luka to the Lakers…
Season 4 What GIF by The Office

Luca is fat, lazy and wines during an entire game. He won’t get and stay in condition. I wouldn’t want to give this guy a max contract. He will not be playing in the league in his mid thirties. He’s a great scorer. Davis and Luca always are injured. Davis with Kyrie can win for the next several years. I understand why the Mavs were willing to let him go. It’s a big gamble, but Luca and LeBron is going to be interesting when fat Luca never plays defense or/gets back on defense. Luca has ballooned to 260 pounds.

It’s shocking. Perennial all nba player for years. The conditioning stuff seems overblown to me.

They were just in the finals!

As I said above you can rationalize the why for Dallas. (Not necessarily agree with the end decision, but its not irrational).

But you can't rationalize the trade return.

It basically seems that once Dallas started having concerns about Luka and discussed it internally, they totally let themselves diminish the trade value of Luka as an asset as well. (In a certain way a form of bidding against yourselves)

Beautiful chess move by Cuban.

Luka wasn't resigning and they had no interest in tying that money to someone who coasts on his God given gifts instead of working hard to get better.

I still think they are missing something for this year, and probably really only have two good years left of AD, but this gives them strong interior D, fresh up Kyrie to do his thing, and keeps cap space available to make moves in off-season.

It's also a win for the Lakers. They get a name and face of franchise for when Lebron is gone (essentially swapping salaries with him and Luka) and making room for more impact pieces.

Luka to the Lakers for AD?!
This morning I listed to the Simmons emergency podcast and it was funny to hear him and his 2 connected guest having to confirm with their contacts that Shams wasn't hacked and it was a real tweet.

Didn’t Cuban give up his majority interest a few years ago?

Cuban isn’t involved with basketball ops anymore.

Cuban doesn't really have much say if any these days. If he did he never lets Luka go.

This is a far more net positive trade for the Lakers long term than Dallas. AD and Kyrie aren't winning sht together.
100%

Luka is a 5x first team all nba player. He backpacked a team to the WCF and then the Finals last year.

Trading away a 25 year old super star and getting back what they got is absurd.

I don’t care about conditioning, defense, whatever. Luka’s accomplishments are insane. He’s tracking to be a top 15 - 20 player of all time, if not higher depending on if he’s getting chips.

And then if you’re going to ship him out, at least maximize the return.

If the Adelsons demanded this move, Nico should quit. If Nico made this move, Nico should be fired. Also, I’d bet good money that Luka and Kidd haven’t seen eye to eye.

The Lakers now get to sign Luka to the non incumbent max which saves them $12M a year.

There is also a non zero chance the Adelsons are mirroring the plot of Major League to crash out the Mavs and move the team to Vegas.

2000 percent agree. Even assuming Luka had let the Mavs know he wasn't resigning, the return is insanely bad.

1. Who says it was Cuban? He doesn’t control the team anymore

2. Great chess move to move a guy with the rest of the league not even knowing he was available? shop him around.

Can never again make fun of the lakers fans on twitter making mock trades of Talen Horton Tucker for Karl Anthony Towns…

Harrison told The News that he and Pelinka began having “basketball” conversations more than a month ago.

“Then all of a sudden we’re like, ‘Would you ever do this?’

‘Nah, you’re joking, right?’

‘Hmm. Interesting. Maybe I would.’

Added Harrison: “And then it just built over time over the last three weeks.”

Lmaooooo. Pelinka probably thought Nico was on bath salts.
