2024-25 Portal

to be fair, even Dabo at Clemson couldn’t sustain their success by just recruiting HS and relying on player development. Plus they had top 10 classes to work with. Right now we haven’t really brought in a portal player of note besides Thomas. I know what Fran said about focusing on HS recruiting but i think you need a solid 80/20 share of fill-in , plug and play, portal players to be successful in todays game. So far what we lost due to graduation and the few guys in the portal have not been replaced any where near for we need to be competitive next season. Also, Fran doesn’t seem like he will redshirt freshman so that also factors into player development . We’re not bringing in the kids who are ready to play as a freshman but are playing them anyways to keep them happy. imo i’m not sure how that recipe works in todays college football?
Not sure why we are trying to compare what Dabo is doing vs what Fran is doing. Dabo has been the HC at Clemson since 2008. He has had his players installed for 14 years. His is not currently rebuilding a program. Fran is currently in his first full recruiting season. He is building the base of the FRANchise. That is what is needed and what he is focused on. They just aren't in the same place right now to be comparing what each are doing.

I would love to see some enterprising young journalist do a deep dive into the statistics of the portal. How many players are moving “up” or “down.” How many fail to find landing spots? How many never get their degrees? How many who move on get drafted? Which positions have the most success in the portal? And the all important, how much portalling is driven by cash?

This one hurts! Rahtrel Perry offensive tackle from central Connecticut st was high on the board for Fran and the staff. He visited in December and then we made it through visits to Florida and Florida St without him committing. That provided hope that Syracuse was in position to land the commitment- unfortunately he ended up choosing Maryland after a late push.

Staff moved on, took Bertrand I think.

Ended up getting a strong 3K to derail his life for 24 months. Hey, life’s about experiences I guess.

Will be interesting to see if a player portals in January or takes their shot in the spring knowing if they don't make the two deep they have to wait awhile.
It just means there will be more going on behind the scenes before Jan. 2, so players announce and then enroll in early January.
