2024-25 Portal

Him and Donnie are the only ones from this roster I actually want to stay.

If you pair him with a solid point guard(with a competent coach), he could do well.

I look at Choppa and JJ as an either/or situation, at best, and the indications are that Moore wants to move on. Since Kiyan plays the same position, it's pretty clear that Moore is likely gone.

Too bad we couldn't manage our billionaire on the bench
That one angers me as well.

But after all this time, bringing it up every time someone utters the words “billionaire “ and “NIL” in the same sentence is kind of reminiscent of my 8 year old after I cut off his video games…

To be fair I don't think anyone can manage billionaires very well.

And here comes the spin article this morning haha. Ok now Pitino says it's not NIL because they have 2 guys on their team that are not highly paid.

"St. John’s, The Post recently reported, has an NIL payroll around $4 million, which is believed to be No. 1 in the Big East."

“So you build a team by making sure you understand the whole puzzle of what goes into it, and people just mischaracterize the NIL and [how] St. John’s has been built. St. John’s didn’t get built by the NIL. St. John’s got built with the character of the players, and certainly we are excited to have these young men.”

Can't make this stuff up. So Pitino has 4 mil (2 mil from just one guy) in NIL to spend and the rest of the big east is at 1.5 - 2 mil at total, but guess that doesn't matter. Pitino is a great coach but can we stop with the gaslighting.

When one considers the giant increase in attendance, merch sales and donations that has come along with the Johnnies resurgence this season, one should recognize that $4 million is a small amount in comparison.

It continues to blow my mind that people have such a narrow view of basketball NIL budgets.

I joked last week that SU should take out loans to pay NIL, but it honestly makes sense. A few million bucks to get 5,000-10,000 people back in the Dome and the team back into the top 25 would pay for itself.

How soon after our season ended last year did guys announce that they were leaving? So far it’s been quiet, which could mean we are figuring out how to make guys stay.

That might be a pretty good idea for once. We are feeding too much talent to other programs before our guys really become fully developed players. Get our current guys to agree to take roles focusing on their strengths and bring in 2 to 3 guys P4 players in the transfer portal.

The discussion with Moore should be about accountability. Guys would rather pout and transfer due to lack of playing time than to fix their flaws. Moore should be complimented for his energy and shooting but constructively criticized for his defense and ball handling. We desperately need Freeman to return but he needs to get stronger and be more aggressive. JJ can definitely be effective in a reduced role and not be the number one option at all times. There were times where he dominated when the opposing team had no one to stop him slashing to the basket.

About 5 days I think. Last game last season was the 13th. Copeland announced on the 18th.

Likely? Definitely

I hive I think he and Choppa could wind up there lol
oh hell no i give up GIF

I could be way off base since I have no idea of how the system works for SU. However, in my simple mind the first thing you have to establish is the total funds you have available (a realistic number, not a wish list). From there you can decide how that's most efficiently allocated to get the best on court results.

Without looking at the big picture, just throwing out $$ for this kid and $$ for that one seems a little short sighted. Kline, Red, and team have probably agreed on the big picture. Fitting the pieces will be the challenge and that's certainly the issue for every program out there.

This is where the forbidden idea of “Private Equity” would come in handy.

If they can increase attendance by 10k, they make millions of dollars additional per home date.

If they borrow, say, $5 million dollars against future earnings, and load up on five great starters for the basketball team, they make a tremendous financial return on increased attendance.

But the program’s in completely different silos and thinking outside the box is impossible.

There might also be a problem with NCAA rules, but if, in seven seasons, we get a slap in the wrist, it’s probably worth it.

The people in charge of the program don’t seem to be innovative in any way, so we’re constantly behind the curve, and it’s down in results.

Red has done a good job managing the program in a few ways, but considering roster building and in game coaching are 1A and 1B in importance, his succeeding in every minor way is irrelevant.

One thing we learned is that we cannot be successful without a strong legitimate point guard. That’s where the big NIL dollars should go, along with retaining Freeman. We do not need to spend a lot on a center again, but might be better off with 2 average centers who can provide decent play defensively.

I would predict we see movement by the end of the day tomorrow. Today is all about the selection show but you never know.

If I had to put money on it:
  • Donnie- Back (Melo helps here)
  • Choppa- Gone (Big East school)
  • Bell- Gone (West Coast school)
  • JJ- Back
  • Cuffe- Back
  • Petar- Back
We WILL get a starting high level caliber PG (staff is prioritizing this above all, aside from keeping Donnie, and Melo will help here too). We will also get a good center who will be more of a defensive presence.

Disagree. Everyone on our roster is pretty terrible on D individually I feel like it’s almost certainly a coaching/system issue
While a "system" may help, good defense is nothing more than individual attitude and effort. Offense requires a certain skill level, but a kid can play defense if his mindset makes it a priority.

We had times this year when Carlos/ Cuffe/ Bell and Petar were on the court at the same time. Really there’s no way more than 1-2 of them should’ve been at the court at any given time against P5 competition.
