2024-25 Portal

Not sure how you can be sure of that as who is going to knock the doors to come here knowing how bad of shape the program is in and a lame duck coach.
How bad a shape was the ville in? If you have the money, and now we do, the players will come. What they do when they get here, different story. Now, I am not saying we will get everyone we want. We won't. But I would bet you that we have say a 12 player wish list and we will get our players from that list.

Money talks and doesn’t matter how long a coach is here since Portal transfers usually only play one year anyways.

Yes, we are going to get a high level PG and a really good C. We are going all in.

There are alot of big time programs that will be in a market for a high level PG. That market is going to be really really really expensive.

We have seen no sign that he is that guy. Quite frankly, there is so much wrong with what he has done so far that it makes me fearful that he has too much to learn and change. If it was just instill offense, defense and manage the program, I might be more optimistic. But incredible, it's more than that. It's the every aspect that is the killer.
If he needs mentoring, what is JW doing? You still have JB on the payroll. I read a great article yesterday in the NY Post that I sent to a staff member. It was an interview with Pitino. Go read it if you can find it. Pitino sent every assistant coach to another program to come back with a new drill or offensive set they don’t have. It’s a way to come up with fresh ideas and to help your assistants to grow. Red has been around a long time and should have several contacts. Use them. He should know where he needs to get better and go pick coaches minds. That’s not a sign of weakness, but of strength. That’s what leadership is all about.

A fine idea, Do you see Red doing any of that? I don't.

I'm with you, but again they fired their coach where we still have the same one.

Unfortunately, this is 100% spot on.

It’s a pretty noteworthy difference. One thing I do hope for Red is that with the extra staff and support. He can really focus on the coaching part of the game throughout the offseason and in season. Player development, designing schemes, etc. He just seemed exhausted before this past season even started.

I'm not trying to give Dan Englestad a stray in this thread but The Mount improved by nine wins this year and played in their conference Tournament final.

I only say this to question Red's evaluation (which obviously everyone is doing). Just one more data point.

I think he should get rid of two of the assistants and get some more proven guys in here.

I think the AD needs to step up the support when he sees one of his coaches struggling. Look at the difference in staff structure at Tennessee with a head coach who has been doing that for almost 40 years at 5 different schools compared to Syracuse with a guy that just finished his 2nd season at his alma mater.

Give Melo and Devo any player development positions you can create. Find some GA's. Invest in the product if you want 34k fans to invest and show up to support.

Guys, I am not going to be specific because when I told you what Red's contract was, I got push back. But unlike last year, we have NIL money. Plenty of it. Will we have it next year if we have another dud of a season ,no idea? But we have it this year and we will be better prepared for the portal by a long shot than last year.
Obviously, it is better to have the money than not, but how do we attract talent from better programs with the same or more money? The Anthony family and their media/business empire is the only thing I can see possibly making a difference.

Alex Kline also needs a staff. He might have the analytics guy as part of his staff. When North Carolina just hired a new GM, they also gave him a staff of five people. You have a a sports management program at SU. Create some internships to offer help. There’s ways to provide help without having to spend big bucks.

We Can Do It on the Cheaptm

Remember, we won the transfer portal last year when everyone else overpaid...

Agreed. SU is a great Brand and don't think for a minute that Melo and crew being on board isn't going to matter to these kids because it will. The social hype around the program is going to be very strong and that is significant factor in today's world.

The only “pay to play” money can come from the University (if lawsuit is approved by the judge). All monies coming from outside sources (True NIL) will have to be substantiated if it’s more than $600 per contract. This is what the NCAA is working on. Monies will have to be included in a software database. Could someone offer a true NIL contract for big bucks? Absolutely, but the committee set up to oversee this has a value added for every money making NIL opportunity. You won’t get away with with a car dealership paying $1 million for a commercial. The question they haven’t figured out is what will be the penalty if you are “paying to play” outside from the University.
Like most of their stupid rulings, there is literally no way the NCAA can enforce the idea of a value added requirement. Two words on the idea of value added: “Mind Shares.”

Using your hypothetical:

If I ask you which car dealership you think of first in the Syracuse area, who do you choose?

Why?

How much do you think that is worth to that car dealer?

Can you justify that car dealer paying any Syracuse player literally any amount of money to be the number one regional car dealer in mind shares?

Apple’s branding is worth USD 574.5 billion, up 11% from 2024, according to a Google search. Advertising isn’t always about selling specific products or some amount of cars in a given period.

Being the car dealer that “gets Syracuse back to the tournament” might be worth every Penny if that hypothetical million dollars in NIL.

I suppose it could prevent random rich guys paying for players, but rich guys always have companies they can tie their NIL to.

Moten makes a plea for Adam Weitsman to be brought back into the fold to help with NIL and to right the ship

In a few weeks,. I will lay out what has gone on in my journey to do exactly that. I believe there will be a story about it and that is why I am waiting to lay it out here.
Whoa! So you’re saying there’s a chance?!

Yes I think you are completely correct. Not only will there be inflation on portal players but the better teams will spend money to retain their best players so the quality going into the portal will be less than in previous years

This summer is going to measure our commitment to competing. We all know that Red needs every bit of help we can bring to bear for next season.
