2024-25 Portal

Prices are going to go up, so you better make sure you’re spending wisely to get your monies worth. Freeman is not worth that kind of money. The only thing he’s decent at is defensive rebounding. He’s a horrible offensive rebounder because he has no motor. He’s a pretty good shooter for a big, but not a knock down shooter. He should get better but he has a long way to go on both ends of the court. SU will have around $7.5-8 million (including NIL tournament) available for NIL. They might be able to scrounge up a little more if they really want someone. If Freeman is our best player, we are not a NCAA team. Not even close. He should be option three or four on a good team. So if prices are going up and he deserves #2 million, where is the money to pay two or three others more than $2 million? You have to pay the entire roster. St. John’s spent around $3.5-4 million (per N.Y. Post article) for their current roster. Kadary is their highest paid at $1.2 million. They would not pay $2 million for Richmond. It’s going to be a fascinating portal season. We will know very quickly who we are going after. What players ask for will not be what they may get. There’s going to be a lot more sophistication in selecting rosters this year. Ask Kansas how paying $2 milllion for a bench player worked out. The one thing that’s not clear is Donnie’s health. Was he playing hurt all year? I thought he limped all season. Maybe that was responsible for his explosiveness or the coaching staff’s time management. It might explain his lack of agility and inability to slide his feet on defense.

Yes, I think the one unknown is when boosters reach their limit.

Agreed. Everything from top to bottom needs to be improved. I think next year will be better and we will spend $ to improve talent. However, the most impactful change has to occur at the top. You need a dynamic and effective leader to instill a vision, instill offense, defense and manage every aspect of the program. I think we all know that Autry is not that.
When you have s coach who doesn’t have an offensive or defensive plan, you still will struggle.
Red also in 2 years has shown no ability to make in game adjustments or proper substitutions.
He also let's players just keep shooting when
they are missing everything.

It’s already being reported in Kentucky that Pope has locked up a major portal player even before the portal opens. They want a defensive minded point guard and a wing shooter, just like everyone else.

We have seen no sign that he is that guy. Quite frankly, there is so much wrong with what he has done so far that it makes me fearful that he has too much to learn and change. If it was just instill offense, defense and manage the program, I might be more optimistic. But incredible, it's more than that. It's the every aspect that is the killer.
Alot of people don't like when I say there are 15 other teams in the ACC that looked like they were lost most of the season too and that's alot of coaching experience on those teams.

Maybe not as bad as us but no tourney is no tourney so do they really care if they were 15th like us or 5th in the ACC? And we all saw where we stacked up against the SEC early on, then outside of the top 3 there were maybe only 2 top 25 wins across the rest of the ACC. UNC 1-10 in Q1. SMU was probably the last team that had a chance on the ACC bubble and we should've had them at their place. The whole ACC is on life support.

I don't like the Autry right now either but there are alot of things that are different this year from where they were at this exact time last year or the last few years.

Go back 5 years and we had the covid canceled year, 3 years ago the awkward Boeheim departure, 2 years Jessie bounced, last year Benny dismissed / Brown out the door to Duke. This year could be a March where we are actually building instead of just getting bad or unexpected news.

The only thing I can say about Autry is that he cares and it's weighing on him, the dude looks like he aged 20 years this season. No one can stomach another year like this and we should've never had to this year but I do want to see what we do this offseason as a program. If the non-con goes like it did this year I think that's the time to pull the fire alarm and really start lining up the next candidate very early. Or maybe we roll into ACC play for once not as underdogs.

Any chance we can split this into two threads; one- players in the portal and two-bitching about why we can’t have nice things?
You think the new thread about the portal won’t turn into one about why we can’t have nice things?

We have people who can find a way to turn a thread about the color of the sky into a reason Red should be fired.

I don’t doubt we have more money to spend via NIL this year than we did last.

What concerns me is if we’re prepared for the inflation that is surely going to occur, and if the money we have can fully account for that.

I really, really, really, really hope we’re not going to get a bunch of “how could we know the price for [X] would be so much higher than last year?”.

I truly believe MLB is the closest business model to NCAA basketball. We are the Blue Jays or Cardinals. I don’t see SU becoming the Mets unless we find a Steve Cohen.

I agree. Although it's funny how MLB has a revenue sharing model where the lower revenue-generating clubs get a subsidy from the higher revenue-generating clubs. Meanwhile the ACC is moving to the exact opposite -- a model where the rich get richer, by design.

That aside, I hope SU was 3-4X the NIL money they had last year.

Agreed. SU is a great Brand and don't think for a minute that Melo and crew being on board isn't going to matter to these kids because it will. The social hype around the program is going to be very strong and that is significant factor in today's world.
Let's hope!

I’m still not getting all this loan talk. At this time SU cannot pay “NIL” to players. So what does a loan do?
My idea was using Private Equity (more likely Business Development Companies) to turn the athletic department into a commercial enterprise. Sure, the rules currently prohibit the AD directly paying players, but that isn’t really the point.

Could you partner with a business in a way where they dramatically juice your NIL funding to improve your team all at once, thus driving increases in revenue for the department? In exchange, said business gets an investor-like cut off the increased revenue. Hypothetically, a $5 million additional investment in NIL nets you a top10 team, and brings average attendance up 10k for 20 home dates. That additional attendance nets $30 million in revenue, the BDC costs a $5 million profit and the school has an extra $25 million because it was inventive in its business strategy.

Nobody at the NCAA even thought to make that illegal, so everything is good in Orange Land

Not sure how you can be sure of that as who is going to knock the doors to come here knowing how bad of shape the program is in and a lame duck coach.
The "lame duck" will not be a factor if you bring in senior/grad players, because they'll be gone after one season, too.

Red sky at night, sailors' delight
Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning

(Damn, OrangeX, you beat me to it. )

I think you are going to be legitimately shocked at the inflation this year. NIL is going to have a big increase organically, and on top of that we’re going to have schools paying players directly.

I think a guy like Lampkin would be worth double what we paid him this year, and a guy with Freeman’s potential is going to get way more than even that.
theres nothing in place to stop the salaries increasing...someday they will rival NBA salaries and other pro sports...its honestly ridiculous that it has come to this...

the landscape has been altered so much that i dont think we have properly djusted as fans...the university certainly hasnt

is there another program in the country that has been devastated to the extent SU has? i cant remember ever watching empty dome games for the ORANGE over 3 decades

but everyone insists the portal and NIL is a good thing...

Thank God we have the portal or we might not win five games next year.

SU would not be the only one. Lots of programs will have to use the portal to simply fill their rosters next season.

On the Selection show they mentioned schools had increased wins by 19, 17, and 11 year-over-year and made the tournament.

And we know that L'Ville, UK, and Mich had all brought in completely new rosters. There is a connection.

It's a whole new world.

Didn't FSU talk about this and get shut down?

Also zero percent chance any school's chancellor signs off on something like that, especially not SU.

we wouldnt be in this situation in the first place though
Ask Miami about that. Two seasons ago, they were in the FF. Laranaga said 8 guys on that roster told him they would be checking out the portal, looking for more NIL $$$.

And look where the 'Canes have been since.

We really need to be the Brewers or the Rays because we’re never going to be the Dodgers Yankees or any other big market team. We need to be smarter and find inefficiencies in the portal. Whether that’s mining junior college or going overseas, we need to find talent at a price point we can afford.

Just don’t see it happening with Red as the coach
