Aaron Boone said "it might not line up" for Max Fried to be the Opening Day starter "just because of when Gerrit went down and how everyone is slotted." Said "we'll continue to work through this," with an announcement expected in the next few days.

This is probably a big reason we have so many injuries. OD is 3 weeks away and people can’t adjust their training by 1-2 days? Makes no sense.

I know they've been doing it forever (and I've been wondering for almost as long), but why do they have split squad games? Is it just to have more opportunities to observe the players?

I think it might be because there are an odd number of teams that train in Florida - 15. So on days all 15 are playing at least one team has to play a split squad game. It might be similar in Arizona but I don't know.

It boils down to getting reps and letting coaches see as many players as possible play.

It’s going to be interesting to see how he does as a starter. Seems like he fell apart as a closer as soon as anyone got on base.

Clarke Schmidt To Miss Start Due To Shoulder Soreness
Schmidt’s right shoulder is “not bouncing back as well as he wanted to” following his last outing, Boone said, so the club is “just being cautious with it.”

The issue isn’t considered serious enough to send Schmidt for any tests, and he is still slated to work tomorrow in another capacity, as the plan is for the righty to throw a bullpen session. Should all go well in that session, Schmidt would then return to the rotation for another start.
