2024 Preseason Polls (Media #9 / Coaches #12 / USALAX #9)

Michigan does have a 2024 roster up.
So Ryan Schriber is back for a 5th year as a graduate student.
Looks like Mich loses a good amount of their secondary scoring options, along with Zawada. No Peter Thompson, Bryce Clay, Jacob Jackson, or Jake Bonomi, 4-7 in their points leaders last season. But they do get Justin Brown back, who is a serious dodger.

Scratch that I guess Brown did play last year but had almost zero points. Not sure what happened there.

I don't know really either. Justin Brown just didn't seem to shoot very well, only 2 for 31. He did pretty well in 2022, with 13 goals in 36 shots, and 3 assists. He looked like an up and coming star. Maybe he will get back on track this year.

Yeah I remember watching him in highlight videos from 2022 and thinking he looked like a future star. Guys like that can still be a problem if they draw a lot of slides or demand a long pole match up

Cornell brings back a sneaky amount of players and getting Long back I assume healthy is a huge boost when you already have Kirst running around out there. Their 1st midfield line looks set and pretty good as well. Think the questions for them are most only the defensive side. They should be good at FOOG with Cascadden and crew. Defensively though they seem to have major question marks. Obviously Adler is gone along with Ierlan and I think they lost at least another pole as well on a defense that was struggling even with all of those guys and the top close D guy in the country last year. Offensively they should be very good with Kirst, Long and that Frosh kid from Canada Firth I think. Defensively I think it could be a real struggle and if they get an injury or two watch out. Still 7 seems about right to me I guess you could swap them and Cuse and Army and put them at say 9 but I think their definitely a top 10 team.

I do agree on Michigan, seems low but Zawada is a massive loss. They did do a real nice job in the portal but they have no real track record of sustained success and that OOC is fairly tough with UVA, ND, harvard and Jax. I think 10 for them would be appropriate or even 9 but hard to bump Cuse or Yale out of those spots.

Overall I think its pretty reasonable. I think Duke probably has the best team on paper but you can't fault ND being #1 though history says they're almost a lock to underperform in eh tourney. I would put Maryland as the top B10 team but all 3 of those schools project to be really good so it's really splitting hairs. Denver and Gtown are the two that really stick out. Denver struggled last year and while a new staff should help there wasn't some large infusion of talent. G-town was up and down last year but man they lost an S ton to graduation. Their first 5 games are Loyola, Hop, Penn, ND and Brown. Could get real ugly real quick.
Yeah Kirst and Long have played together since at least high school so the chemistry there is going to be baked in.

With Matsui and Bowers not returning, along with Sausted and ssdms Sallade and Zinn also not returning, that is 5 of 6 starters on the defense are not returning for UVa. Then you have the loss of LaSalla at FO and Dickson and McConvey on the offense. It seems a little crazy to rank UVa at #3.

The one returnee on defense Cole Kastner was an HM AA and UVa does have their goalie Matt Nunes (.529 sv pct) back. But in the end, can you make a statement like UVa's defense will be better than Syracuse's, what would you be basing that on?

I guess I will go with
1) Duke - Brennan O'Neill, Zawada, McAdory, Williams - Naso on face-offs.
2) Notre Dame - not sure they will have the top defense without Tevlin, Fake, and Boyer
3) Maryland - Return a lot including top goalie McNaney and FO man Wierman
4) Penn State - TJ Malone returns on Final Four team. Lost little. Bring in transfer Sean Donelly and top freshman Kyle Lehman to bolster offense. FOs are a question mark.
5) Cornell - CJ Kirst and Michael Long return on attack, probably will be joined by top freshman Willem Firth.
6) Syracuse - Loaded on offense. Defense has had a season to mature. Not strong on Face-offs.
7) Johns Hopkins - Returns a lot. Looking for players to step up and become stars.
8) Virginia - Lost a ton, including 5 of 6 starters on the defense. Still are loaded with talent like Shellenberger and Cormier.
9) Army - Returns a lot. Strong of face-offs with Coletti.
10) Yale - Top attack group with Brandau, Johnson, and Lyons
11) Michigan - Transfer Tiernan could help fill in for Zawada, to go with Boehm and Cohen. Despite the addition of Ronda, midfield scoring could be a problem. Defense bolstered with transfers. Wietfeldt back on FOs and Taylor in goal.

I almost guarantee St Joes ends up in the top 20 to finish the yr. They have there whole potent attack unit back and also landed former Will Mark and Jake Murphy LIU teammate and 2 time NEC offensive player of the yr Richie Lacalandra. He's exactly what they have been missing a fast athletic QB who can create on his own and free up those big strong shooters and finishers they have on offense. They also have a legit goalie who came in midseason last yr as a freshman and was very good. They lost to Hopkins by 1 goal with 2 goalies who were awful that game then lost in OT to Penn with the same goalies. Levi Anderson is back who is a preseason AA selection and was drafted to the PLL but chose to come back. They lost Zach Cole taking face offs but added a transfer from Maryland. If they can be around 50 % with the talent they have and Richie running the offense they are my sleeper. If the win there conference no one will want to see them in the tournament.

Richie Lacalandra LIU Highlights
The first half is a little far away but stick with it the 2nd half is all close ups. He transfered to a Ohio State last season and started at attack for 4 games but left school and was granted 2 more yrs of eligibility.. Very talented and a sleeper this yr. That LIU team had talent then coach Wolf left and all the best players transferred which is how SU ended up with Will Mark. I just love lax so root for sleepers like this. Maybe I'm just so excited Lax is finally here hahaha
