2024 Transfer Thread

The Wahoos were down to just 1 FO guy, Gable Braun, so one would have to figure they would pick up at least a couple. The freshman Henry Metz from Salisbury School is probably more for the future.

Official announcement on Anthony Ghobriel FOGO xfer to UVa from Navy.

"Syracuse and Duke, right now, appear to have upgraded their rosters through the acquisition of transfers. The Orange will be much stronger in the middle of the field with pro-level midfielders Sam English and Jake Stevens. I was extremely impressed with Stevens late in the 2023 season playing for the Tigers. He’s a big-time PLL and indoor prospect, with a tool box that could fit seamlessly on face-off wings, EMO or EMD. That’s how versatile he is. LSM Matt Wright has some injury concerns after logging a lot of miles for UNC but is a proven commodity in the ACC, who always plays hard. Christian Mule has boatloads of skill and offensive IQ and can find a role in the top 9 offensive players or on extra-man. SU takes a quantum leap towards the Top Ten with these additions complimenting their already outstanding sophomore class."

17. Matt Wright, LSM, North Carolina to Syracuse (1G, 3A, 27GB, 9CT in 14 games)

9. Christian Mulé, A, Lehigh to Syracuse (29G, 44A in 15 games)
Mulé finished third nationally in assists and assists per game last season. How the Orange sort out who plays attack and who plays midfield will be interesting. With Cole Kirst and Alex Simmons gone, Mulé joins a group that will have to sort out who plays down low out of Joey Spallina, Owen Hiltz, Finn Thomson and Trey Deere. Between the righty/lefty balance, the scoring/playmaking balance and the depth of quality midfielders the Orange have, the answers aren’t immediately obvious, but there’s little doubt that Mulé brings a new element to complement Spallina thanks to his distribution.

2. Sam English, M, Princeton to Syracuse (7G, 13A in 9 games)
1. Jake Stevens, M, Princeton to Syracuse (24G, 5A, 35GB in 15 games)
There does not appear to be a Michael Sowers in the 2023 grad transfer class (at least by the standard of “likely to be a top-two threat on a PLL champion and World Champion in the next three years”). So, consider: who was the most impactful grad transfer in the 2022 class? There are certainly arguments to be made for the likes of Dordevic and Chris Fake, but it’s hard not to watch Notre Dame’s late possessions in the national championship game vs. Duke (and in the semifinals vs. Virginia two days earlier) and come to the conclusion that Jack Simmons and, even moreso, Brian Tevlin made a greater impact than any other grad transfer in 2023. So in that vein, while it’d certainly be a surprise to see Syracuse playing on Memorial Day, Stevens stands in as one of the best available proxies for Tevlin and while English’s game might not be identical to Simmons’, he projects as a first-line middie with a Final Four pedigree.

For English, his ceiling will be defined by the degree to which he regains the shooting touch from ’22 that abandoned him in the spring before his season ended due to a spleen injury vs. the Orange. Stevens’ success will likely be determined by how well coach Gary Gait and his staff can find a role utilizes his wide array of skills as a two-way guy who’s so good off the wings.

Jake Stevens, M (Princeton to Syracuse)
Stevens had 24 goals last season for the Tigers, earning honorable mention All-America honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine, but there’s more to his game than scoring. After playing short stick defensive midfielder as a freshman, Stevens has shown a knack for the ball. Had had 179 ground balls in his career, twice topping 60 in a season. He’ll find a way onto the field to contribute for the Orange along with former Princeton teammate Sam English.

Matt Wright, LSM (North Carolina to Syracuse)
Syracuse lost its defensive coordinator, Dave Pietramala, to North Carolina, but the Orange are picking up some defensive talent on the field from the Tar Heels. Wright has 57 games of experience under his belt. He had his best year in 2022 when he had 54 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers. He can create havoc for a defense looking to improve from last year’s 12.1 goals allowed per game.

1. Syracuse

Last year’s incoming freshman class ignited a spark for the Orange en route to an 8-7 record and a lot of bright spots to build upon. Their Transfer Class of the summer of 2023 adds some gasoline. Three of the DI grad transfers are former All-Americans in Sam English (Princeton), Jake Stevens (Princeton) and Matt Wright (North Carolina). English and Stevens are among the prizes of the entire Transfer Pool. Christian Mule is a productive offensive force who really hit stride last season with 73 points for Lehigh. Steven Schmitt (Mount St. Mary’s) is the MAAC’s LSM of the Year.

Their DIII haul is impressive — and recent seasons have shown how much those players can contribute at the DI level. Mason Kohn (Tufts) is the DIII Face-Off Specialist of the Year, filling the Orange’s primary area of need. Jake Titus is a second-team All-America d-middie from Union, and Zack Puckhaber is an honorable mention All-American from Gettysburg.

They are all talented players whose accolades stand for themselves; three of them are in Terry’s Top 10 of individual grad transfer rankings. But what’s more important is how they bolster the biggest areas of need on Gary Gait’s roster.

While I agree fully that Syracuse is #1 in impact transfers, I think a lot of the other rankings are a bit out of whack.

Zawada is an All-American transferring into Duke and Slusher is pretty good.

It will be interesting to see how Zawada adjusts and does playing a different position/role than what he is used to and had so much success with.

i dont know why inside lacrosse is taking it for granted that zawada runs out of the nox. i could easily see him taking mcadorey's spot on attack

Given that McAdory is a natural midfielder and Zawada is not, that would make a lot of sense. I guess the only thing that may give the staff pause is if they don’t want to yo-yo McAdory between midfield, then attack, then back to midfield and then back to attack (potentially) in ‘25. Guess you deal with that when the time comes.

Well that’s interesting. Does this mean he wants to play this spring? Wonder what made him walk away mid fall ball.

So, he’s going to be a semester away from a Georgetown degree…potentially?

Link gone what is it?

Strange - it was Xanders saying that Will Tominovich, defender from Georgetown was entering the portal for the '24-25 season as a grad student. Someone on FanLax had posted about it before the Xanders tweet. Not sure why it was deleted.

Hardy is a Syracuse legacy (father Bill, brothers Tom and Dan) from Tully, NY.
