2025-26 Coaching Carousel

Have a chance to compete for playoffs with more limited resources at Indiana, or compete for titles with unlimited resources at a blue blood?

Money isn't the motivating factor for most football coaches. It will ALWAYS be about winning.

If Bama came calling he'd be gone in a heartbeat.
Then Indiana get a huge buyout. Furthermore if these coaches are successful in creating a winning culture then that said school can BECOME a blue blood. The more success comes more money and resources to a school that takes it seriously. I don’t understand how people think it’s just a set concrete thing and never shifts.

Programs grow and programs decline in either direction all the time.

On any successful football team at any level (from pop warner to nfl) it really freeking helps to have an elite qb!
Cignetti should give at least 25% of his extension $$$ to Mendoza because he's obviously crossed over "the
line" ...wait...wait...wrong sport

His buyout is only $15m.

How many Indiana-level programs have emerged with consistent success over the last 10-15 years that weren't traditional football schools?

That is a pretty good buyout for the coach to pay if he takes another job. That is quite different from the amount that he would GET if he is fired for performance (i.e. not "for cause").

I have no idea how good Indiana is They have the oregon win. But then Oregon struggled with NW and PSU. Indiana probably should have lost to Iowa.

I also think there are few really good teams and many more than can win on a given day.

That is my entire point. It's not enough money to keep him at Indiana if the blue bloods come calling, and the contract is a massive amount if the program starts to backslide into 6-6 seasons

A lot of their commits already have Cuse offers — just need to get them on campus to flip. Time will tell, especially with Napier getting fired and recruits likely to decommit.

Is there a point in hiring a HC anymore? IMO every school should look to hire the most competent FB alumnus for $1M a year to be the head of the program. Then spend $2.5M each on your coordinators.

Really the HC needs to be a leader. They need to be the face of the program. They need to deal with all the off the field non FB stuff. On Gameday they only need to be involved in 4th down and clock decisions. Those aren’t really FB things as much as common sense.

They only have a short term $1M commitment and can make extra money via commercials, etc.

If you need to make a change it is at the Co level and cheaper.

If Florida hired Jesse Palmer as HC and spent $4M each on the COs, are they not just as likely to be good as hiring INSERT HC for $7.5M?

There's got to be an Bama angle to all of Finebaum's comments.
Paul Finebaum is NOT a Bama fan. He grew up in Memphis and is a Tennessee grad. He began radio sports work while still in college. He built a show there focused on pumping for the Vols, so there was little controversy. I think it was his agent who convinced him to move to Birmingham and develop a show in which he would always pitch Bama fans vs. Auburn fans and both against other SEC teams. And he kept stirring the controversy.

Ok. Could have fooled me when listening to him.

It's an act. And he is good at it. Years ago, his radio show made him sound like he hated Bama, and the Ayurburn fans almost literally adopted him. Then he shifted to say bad things about Aura and Bama fans forgave him for being a Vol. The man knows how to stir those pots to get rich.

Imagine if Miami collapses again and all 3 are trying to hire. Syracuse bringing another upset could do it.
