This is what I’m confused about. How does anyone know anything. It’s all agent bluster.

I understand the sentiment behind this post based on how we all perceive Gerry. But I have to believe all coaches say they value the things listed above.

Honest questions I’ve asked here before (this is not specific to you):

1. How does a coach like Gerry (especially since he’s new) convince portal players that his culture at Syracuse is any better than others?
2. How does he determine if a player “fits”?

1. Speak with conviction and confidence, something Fran is also very good at. He’s infectious to anyone that speaks with him. I had friends who aren’t Cuse fans (not from CNY if you’re wondering how) that took in his first press conference that was on the ACCN texting me after saying maybe they might just have to become fans. Kids are going to want to play hard for him. I’m very grateful he chose to come home.

2. I’m sure he has his own set of questions that he asks 1:1 with kids in his office before offering that ensures their character matches social media/what he got on them from their coaches/networks.

According to MMM’s manager, you need two from the same country to maximize the match being a success. I’d say they probably are at least looking for one more!

Is part of it catharsis because you know you no longer have to watch a certain guard’s suspect defense?

It's probably more because I believe in the coaching staff.

Methinks that GMac may have some other thoughts on these top transfer portal targets.

1. It takes time and effort along with overspending to chase these guys.
2. Some of these guys don't fit the culture Gmac is selling. Likely 4 Siena players coming, 2 Frosh back, Euro dudes. Guys chasing bags at their 3rd or 4th school may not be what he wants.

Just think GMac is building an underdog / family culture and that takes a certain type of portal guy, that also wants to be here.

Now we have more money so how do we get the talent along with the culture fits...

Right I don’t discount that at all. There is something to sell here in terms of visions and culture of winning even if it’s a new staff but I don’t challenge that point if we are competing with top 10 programs. I am more saying if we are up against the recency of relevance with some SEC teams we have a dog in that fight around culture with Gerry and staff.

A guy like Wilkens where’s relationship pre existed matters too.

Seeing that Estrella signed with Michigan after all of our talk of possibly getting him and whether he was actually good enough for us and whether $4M was an agent’s fantasy number… doesn’t give me confidence that the new GerryEra is exciting enough to non-Scrantoncuse area folks to get us impactful players, before demonstrating we’re a tourney team.

Feels like my Red Sox, after a bunch of seasons at/near the bottom of the division, and the front office says we’re in “full throttle” mode in the offseason, but then we just sign injured/rehabbing players, reclamation projects, and guys with hidden peripherals and intangibles.

I wish I had some insight into who we should/could get, but I don’t watch much ‘other’ College basketball. I’m left with just considering concepts and trying to parse video highlights and reconciling them vs the competition level in those videos vs the ACC. The big euro scorer we got, for example—I would prolly be more excited about him if not for the hype over this year’s Aussie kid and how our fans were optimistic because he was playing in a ‘pro league’ and had a couple of nice showings in international play. This new guy might be a more prolific Cole Swider. He might be another Fennell.

He’s a good player with the right pieces around him. Louisville hasn’t been able to put together a complete roster yet these last two years so we’ll see how that goes this time around.

So are there other targets we are moving to? We can’t have all our eggs in just these guys? It’s not great missing out on them but the outlook can be all bad right?
