Williams is a good coach! He was the scape goat for the offense. Firing him is pretty much saying he is responsible for entire offensive failures. Come on! Let’s be real! Never “Great” when a coach’s is fired!

Williams is a great guy but didnt do great at Purdue and was decent at Pass pro and not good at running and when we hired him they told us that and they were 1000% correct. Run game is bad and none of the guys fire off ball. i feel he should be removed and i wasnt a fan then either. Oline is really important. We need a big improvment here. it was right thing to do.

Between him and ERob I keep hearing "Strong recruiter" but I've yet to see someone come up with concerete examples of studs that they have landed. Not trying to play devil's advocate - I just want to know how much of this is myth versus actual results. That's important to gauge because the scheme and the DL technique (setting the edge, stunts, etc) has been non-existent. Basically - we need proof that they can bring in talent because they are failing at other areas of their job.

You raise a fair point, and honestly I am just repeating what I hear others say. Who recruits who is somewhat opaque.

If we want to get serious about defense there’s only one name that should be at the top of the list: Will Muschamp.

This program has been soft, confused and flat out embarrassing on D. Enough with experiments and recruiter first hires. We need a proven defensive mind who’s been through the wars of the SEC and knows how to build a unit that hits back. Muschamp is a defensive savant. He’s coordinated elite defenses at LSU, Auburn, Texas and Georgia. He’s coached under Nick Saban. He’s been a head coach in the SEC. He’s seen every scheme, every trick, every high‑powered offense and he knows how to shut them down.

Muschamp is stuck as an analyst at Georgia. That’s basically football purgatory for a guy with his resume. Giving him the DC job at Syracuse isn’t just a fit it’s an upgrade, a chance to get back in the driver’s seat and prove himself again. Fran wants to build “Georgia of the Northeast”? Then go get the guy who’s been running Georgia’s defense the last few years. That’s how you change culture overnight.

Muschamp is an analyst by choice. He wanted to have a less demanding role to better balance time with his family.

Or...he has made so much money in his life as a Head coach and DC that he really can throttle it back to a level he wants. It's been said a few times his situation allows him to see his son a Vandy. Maybe once his son has moved on he will re-engage as a DC again? The guy has made tens of millions of dollars. Would love to have the guy. Just saying finding time for his son is not a bad thing.

Changes needed to be made. I would still make at least one other move on O (Johnson). Thinking Gattis (sp) will be co-o coordinator.
The big thing is making the new hires elevate the program and players. If bad hires are made it means nothing.

In this case, it's not an excuse. He genuinely wants to spend time watching/following his son play college football. He likes Fran a lot and the two are close. But as others have pointed out, he's made a lot of money and knows he can get back into a full time role on his own time frame.

So your theory is he was secret probationed? He isn't good enough to be DC but he is can't miss here? Also he has dealt with SEC level talent the last 25 years. He would be in for a shock here.

With SEC level talent DCs can get occasionally just have the front 4 rush the passer. At SU that just allows the QB to eventually pick you apart. With SEC level talent DCs can expect the Ss to fly up and make tackles in space, or be used for contain on running plays. At SU that leads to missed tackles and big plays.

That is part (just part not the whole) of the problem we had with ERob. It wasn't that his scheme lacked being sound. You just needed great talent for it to be effective.

Having a DC that does not have experience coaching up talent will have to scrap what they know and duct tape their system to fit the talent they have to work with here. Not all DCs can make that change. It isn't a lack of knowledge or play calling ability, but being able to pivot to what you have to work with.

Even if you think my analyst by choice take was harsh, are we really pretending Will Muschamp wouldn’t be a massive upgrade over ERob? Muschamp, for all the criticism, has built systems, demanded discipline, and proven he can run a unit.

I get your point about Syracuse not having SEC‑level talent, that’s fair. But that’s exactly where experience matters. Muschamp has coached up rosters across multiple programs, developed players into pros and adapted schemes to fit what he had. So how do you know he can’t coach a player up? ERob couldn’t even get the basics right here, while Muschamp has a track record of teaching fundamentals and building toughness. His ceiling and floor are both higher than ERob’s.

Muschamp has decades of experience coordinating defenses at the highest level.

That is the worry though. He has ONLY been at the highest level.

I am not saying I do not want him. And he is easily a huge upgrade over ERob. At the same time the first year will be rough as he has to adjust what he is used to running to fit our talent level. Had this been 2024 it isn't that big an issue. But as of now the 2026 cupboard is bare. It will be rough for any DC.

Personally I would prefer a young DC who has had to deal with a talent issue or a DC with a gimmicky system.
