2025 Fall Ball

A couple guys like McIntee stepping up and the offense could be elite once again this year. This was all without Leo too. Sounds like Kraftson had a good day against Princeton too. More reliable depth could go a long way for us. Army lost a lot of key pieces this year but it is still good to hear that we took care of business.

Any other tidbits from the scrimmages on d, o, goalie, FO?

Sorry, missed a few of these tweets from Kevin Brown. I imagine he’ll have a write up in the next few days. If these have already been posted my apologies.

Deere at midfield is a bit surprising. With Figuerias not playing, hard to tell who the third starting defenseman will be.

Didn’t want to post all of Browns tweets. Sounds like Princeton beat Army 12-2 in the last game of the day.

Seems like a raw deal for Army. They played starters against us and then had to put up some guys against Princetons starters? I guess it is all about getting better with these but not surprised by the lopsided score in that game.

I was not one of the boots on the ground today. I’m sure we will hear more eventually tho
I’m no expert, but I thought the D was active and did a good job fighting through screens. Very active poking the ball out. Goalie looked real good and there were some VERY nice outlet passes to clear, which set some nice transition play. I thought our offense was strong on a fast break. Not saying they can’t play a slow down set offense, but I didn’t see a lot of it.

I wouldn’t put a lot of stock in positions or even individual performances it will all likely change before spring. Timmy Raschdorf use to lead team in points every fall but rarely played in the spring. It’s great they played well but in the end it’s fall ball

Scrimmages takeaway: Depth

Starters are insanely talented, this we all knew, but we may have quality depth at every position this year. Guys who have returned from injury, juniors/sophomores maturing, and a talented freshman class all contributed at a high level.

Long way till May. Don’t want to read too much into Fall Ball but roster feels deeper.

Think at times we set ochoa up for failure. As least good amount of times he got beat was when he pressed out to far n high n he clearly doesn’t have to speed to recover or even catch up enough to force his guy back to middle where help was. He’s got good size n rather strong n solid in close defending. But he can’t cover speed. So think having him press out so much is just terrible decision n really setting him up against his weakness.

Be honestly not sure why we would even press to anyone above the box line. If they wanna stay outside box till someone comes at them then let them. They will waste the clock n keep our guys from wasting energy that’s unnecessary. By pressing out so much teams will spread out creating gaps n wholes making it easier for O to find them. If someone wants to shoot all way out there kinda feel let them n if goalie can’t stop it then that’s bigger issue. As even that far out should be a save almost everytime. Felt we created O for teams to many times by going out to guys when their in no way a threat n they just beat us n cause a mini 6-5 situation n forces us to spin slide n recover which then dmid going to crease n searching for who they suppose to pick up. Also many times defender would take a poor approach when going out to press guy also causing mismatches n confusion.

Jayden Kittelberger sighting! Really like what we have at SSDM between him, bowen and ochoa.

It seems like the top rotation of SSDMs will be Kittelberger, Bowen, Ochoa and I am guessing Jake Spallina? I feel like you usually need five guys you can rely on throughout the season. I wonder if someone else will emerge to challenge this group? I was wondering/hoping one of the injured freshman last year might contribute here, but it looks like McIntee is playing offense full time (and it sounds like he's doing well there, also a need) and Koby White isn't on the roster (hopefully it's an oversite).

Looking at the roster, it's hard to guess who might challenge for a SSDM role. Pike and Schell are both massive at 6'3 220 and 6'4 225 , but I don't think you usually see a SSDM that heavy. Nate LeVine was 6'3 210, so perhaps, but do they have the foot speed and lateral movement? Does Carter Kempney give it another shot? At 163 he always looked a bit slight to me for that role. Maybe one of the longpoles moves to short stick, but we haven't heard of that happening (Bolognino has moved to LSM full time).

Haven't seen Kittleberger play but it sounds like he checks all the boxes. It does make me nervous to rely on a freshman for that role, but Carter Rice stepped in and did pretty well from day one. Bowen, again, don't know much about, but the size sounds promising and it seems like he's fitting in well with the team. Ochoa drove me a bit crazy last year, but LeVine went from a big question mark to a pretty good SSDM by the time he was a junior, so hoping Ochoa can make that leap. Spallina shows good fight, if you don't have to rely on him to be a starter I think you are in good shape. Curious to see who the starters are. I would guess Ochoa and Bowen given their experience?

Agreed on this. The top 4 seems to be Bowen, Ochoa, Spallina and Kittelberger (in no particular order). I would love to see some more guys step up and give whoever the top 4 are some rest. McCarthy kinda has an English-type role and he might be an option for more FO wings which may lead to SSDM runs as a result. I think freshmen can do okay at SSDM, and I think there's some precedent there. I'm thinking Kevin Drew. Pike seems like an option for a defensive role considering he doesn't look as skilled as other midfield options. If Donny Scott isn't getting runs at D or LSM, it'd be great to see him on the field. He's definitely accustomed to a short stick from all of his box experience.
