You have to survive the ground cmon. My example above is the most plain way to explain it. You're telling me, that if he was all alone no one around and he seemingly catches it with 2 steps hits his knee and back and the ball pops out that's a completion? It never is. To continue that, the ball also during that sequence never hits the ground and is in the possession of the defender on the conclusion of the play
you can find examples all season of guys catching a ball, falling down and fumbling.

One of the most famous TD in SB history by Richards was ruled a catch that would never be a catch today.

You can also find examples of catches being made guys sliding on the ground and the D ending up with the ball and it being ruled a completed catch and the player being ruled down.

This was not 2 guys catching the ball at the same time and one ending up with it

Kinda moot anyway since they didn't call an obvious PI in the end zone near the end of regulation.
Look I understand the frustrations, there were many things not called including a hold in the endzone which should've been a safety and also ended the game

r/NFLv2 - Holding in the endzone. should have ended the game 32-30 for Broncos. Lets talk about that missed call

I agree its a hold. but it wouldn't be a safety since it started outside the endzone by rule.

Well obviously first and foremost we have to be talking current rules, I mean..

He didn't survive the ground while maintaining possession.

Look I'm for AI reffing 100% of games from now on to eliminate controversy so we don't have to do this every Monday morning, believe me. The reffing absolutely sucks, same for college hoops. Taking the human element out is the one area I can think of that would vastly improve things. The NFL is a joke in the current form.

Honestly had there been no catch at all I was most surprised they ignored the PI that allowed the DB to get his hands on the ball at all. but they also ignored the PI on the other Cooks play that would have won the game. But then decide to call twice on Bills going the other way late.

Why would you introduce another play from another game? You want me to sit up here and defend refs all day? Nope, this has nothing to do with the play I'm talking about
See the Rodgers catch in the other thread and try to make this make sense.

I was rooting for the Bills, but I’m not to wound up about the INT like everyone else. If no defender is there the receiver has to survive the ground. That didn’t happen on that play. The issue is the NFL hasn’t been consistent with that call however I think yesterday it was right.

The first PI call on that last drive was a complete reaction to booing fans which is the absolute worst characteristic of any ref.

There was a roughing the passer so it’s still first down Denver, but less yardage. Who knows what happens from there. Guessing the same thing but still. That call at that point in the game should be looked at by whoever evaluates these guys.

Just another data point that supports the contention that refs decide the outcome of games much more than most want to admit.
Totally agreed. I think that out of Hockey, baseball, basketball and football, the refs decide football games much much more.

I've been watching football 40 years, and I cannot even define what a catch is - one of the most fundamental aspects of football.

The last PI was terrible. That’s the call I’m most upset about.

I think it’s worth noting that there catch calls are coming from NFL HQ. The officials aren’t deciding it.

Great run by the 49ers given their injuries.

However, both the Eagles and the Seahawks dominated both LOS in the last two games. The 49ers need to beef up both lines in the off season. They get back two starters on the OL and Bosa+ on the DL, but it looks like they need to do more.

100% and something smart coaches prey on. Watch any Duke home game when the fans boo a call, they're attacking the basket next possession.

Oh I'm not trying to defend every controversial call or saying the refs are competent enough. Just a play by play basis. I just feel they got last night correct. I don't think that should've been a completed catch by Rodgers either.

I spent over an hour this morning watching the All 22 tape of the game, rewinding over and over, etc. Calls were missed on both sides 100%. Like I said, I'd be down to totally take the human element out of it and get things a lot better.

And of course Payton threw deep again. The seed had been planted.

It went from let them battle to listen to the crowd roar. Referee Frank Drebin.

The issue is the Bills benefitted from a catch with this exact call in the second NE game and Pats fans were outraged. I think it’s an INT, but the fact the NFL hasn’t defined the hat the outcome of this play should be has caused the controversy.

Here’s 3 plays all called differently:

The Tre White was 100% interference. The ball isn't even in the view yet. The other key is, is it a catchable ball, no doubt.

Now while stills can show legitimacy in some plays, in others they're completely misleading like the interception. The still of Cooks having a ball in his lap doesn't tell the whole story.

The PI that wasn't called on Moss in the endzone, could've easily been called, but what I couldn't tell no matter how many times I rewound was, was it catchable. The angles I had sucked. I would've had no issue if they had called that though.

First blush, I didn't like the PI call against Tre White. However, seeing some replay shots, it's clear he hit Marvin Mims early. Still, if Bo Nix puts 5 more yards of

You could show a very similar view of McMillan grabbing Cooks before the ball got there on the controversial play as well. He absolutely grabbed Cooks first.

Of course I can’t actually find that photo thanks to the nfl mafia.

Kidding about the last part. I’m just lazy.
