I heard the same prognostications. If capacity is in fact down, it might be due to increased demand from upper level donors (Fran effect). Of all the varied perspectives in this thread on parking and tail gating, you hit on one common theme - the lack of transparency from SU.Anecdotally it seems the ticket reps were kept in the dark too. They were conveying that parking would be much better than last
Yeah I selected hanging permitHarrison and the garages is about it (VA, University) oh and Mt Olympus.

From past experience they are pretty lenient on it. Ive parked there the past few years and just walked to the tailgateCouple of notes, none of the west lots have digital passes, so much for scarfing up mobile passes for that sweet sweet resale windfall.
Not such a good one, fine print on the parking map, VA Garage isn’t open until 2hrs before kickoff.
Same price ($240) to park in a garage as outdoors. When do I bend over? My days of coming to SU games are numbered.
Been reading this thread. I get the anger, but the university is in a bad spot.
As of Wednesday, you won’t be able to access the west lots from MLK or Renwick. It’s being shut down forever. On game days I would bet 25-30% of the vehicles getting to west lots from the bottom of the hill, come up the back way.
This fall, the only way in will be almond st, through an area under construction. They don’t want traffic backed up any worse than it already is - which is terrible now.
So they’re likely reducing passes in those lots to keep traffic manageable. I get it. So for a couple seasons, it’s going to be tough. Hopefully in a couple of years, it’ll be back to business as usual, with easier access directly off business loop 81 and a new interchange at Colvin St.
OnTrack train isnt coming back. The trains are gone, the station is gone. The tracks near the bottom of the hill are literally being moved by NYSDOT during construction.
Shuttles from remote, privately owned lots (Destiny/Wegmans etc) won’t work for a variety of logistical reasons. and those entities are not enthused about the liability of tailgating.
Gone are the days of allowing street parking near the west lots too.
Once the decision was made to redo the dome, lots of these problems were locked in. The university is bent on turning parking lots into buildings - probably better use of space for all but 6 days in the fall.
Not sure what the solution is….
I can see working around this 6 games. What a true pain for hoops. I haven’t had seasons in a long time and this would kill any ember of interest.Been reading this thread. I get the anger, but the university is in a bad spot.

The university would be happy if the basketball games generated a traffic issue.I can see working around this 6 games. What a true pain for hoops. I haven’t had seasons in a long time and this would kill any ember of interest.
It’s obvious that the supply of public event parking west of the Dome is constrained temporarily (I-81) and will be phased out long term. Even if the U retains some lots for staff and students (and a few high rollers), the days of West tail-gating are numbered.Been reading this thread. I get the anger, but the university is in a bad spot.

Agreed. They have two entrances too. If one guy won't let you in try the other entrance. From past experience they are pretty lenient on it. Ive parked there the past few years and just walked to the tailgate
So the university can’t take the same amount of time that you just did to craft an informational press release or simple communication to those that have bought or expressed interest in parking explaining the issues and how they have caused changes to parking this year?Been reading this thread. I get the anger, but the university is in a bad spot.

There are probably some loons that just pick another lot that best suits them and go about their day.So the university can’t take the same amount of time that you just did to craft an informational press release or simple communication to those that have bought or expressed interest in parking explaining the issues and how they have caused changes to parking this year?
I understand that these are all real issues and my anger would be less if I wasn’t learning about them from a message board. I cannot imagine the anger some must feel that don’t read the board and are going into this thing blind, besides the assurances from their ticket reps that parking would be easier than year.
If I was the ticket reps I would ask for trauma pay since they are getting the shoot the messenger treatment from the fans since the SU left them in the dark and hasn’t felt the need to communicate any of this information.
Poor SU is a bit tough to swallow here. I am sorry if this sounds like I am being harsh towards your well thought out response, not my intention, just feel SU could have provided actual information.
This is why they better allow cars coming down the south drive of the Dome through ESF.Been reading this thread. I get the anger, but the university is in a bad spot.

Right -- that's the issue. It's always the lack of communication / rollout that gets people annoyed. I get why we're in this position but they could have said, due to I-81, etc. would have given folks to pre-plan ahead of time. They never think worse case and just proactively communicate stuff. It's incredibly frustrating. It’s obvious that the supply of public event parking west of the Dome is constrained temporarily (I-81) and will be phased out long term. Even if the U retains some lots for staff and students (and a few high rollers), the days of West tail-gating are numbered.
My issue is the lack of communication to STH’s, or even to ticket reps, about parking, both short term and long term. I don’t have data on the number of tail gates, but it has to be in the thousands for FB. Where are they going to put people? If it’s south campus, tell us what the plan is. What season will it start? Will there be adequate shuttle transportation, a dedicated lane for buses, support for large groups, maybe a tail gate registration system, etc, etc? People will adjust if the plan is communicated clearly and is well thought out. The slow squeeze is increasingly unpopular.
Not acceptable. We’ll need to park there at least 4 hours before game time. This will be another thing that will turn me away from attending games.Couple of notes, none of the west lots have digital passes, so much for scarfing up mobile passes for that sweet sweet resale windfall.

I’m referencing the not so distant past. The university would be happy if the basketball games generated a traffic issue.
These are the key issues. Just seems there are no longer term or mitigation plans at all. I have been to many away venues where shuttle service is the norm. The key is minimizing the discomfort and making the process as efficient as possible. Quantity and quality of transport vehicles, traffic plan that enables short duration trips, well organized staging areas. For tailgate attendees, it may mean pounding your last parking lot beer a bit earlier, but for the core team that sets up and tears down tailgates it difficult to begin tear down process too early when late arrivals haven’t had full opportunity to take in the festivities. It’s obvious that the supply of public event parking west of the Dome is constrained temporarily (I-81) and will be phased out long term. And the days of heading from the tailgate to the Quad Walk then back for one more hot dog will be over.
Every year the decision to retrofit the Dome at its existing location rather than relocating as part of a new sports complex looks more and more shortsighted. And unless the University takes steps to embrace it, the tailgate culture that supports Orange football will begin to seriously decay.
this whole process is really bringing home how valuable this board is. Nearly every piece of information I get about the school athletic program comes from this board. Grateful. So the university can’t take the same amount of time that you just did to craft an informational press release or simple communication to those that have bought or expressed interest in parking explaining the issues and how they have caused changes to parking this year?

The problem there is neither location is large enough to support that type of overflow crowd from the displaced tailgaters. And even if that can be managed, which is doubtful, you still need parking for all of those people. Where are they finding that? Over the next few years, someone at SU needs to get creative and come up with a solution for adequate parking and tailgating. I know that’s asking a bit much for a school that rarely has been able to address it properly. Keep in mind, this is now an issue at a stadium that has reduced its seating by almost 10k seats for football and a part of that for basketball. Imagine if the football team was on an upward swing playing in a Dome with its former seating allotment. There’s a number of schools across the country — Ohio State and Tennessee come to mind, among others — with large stadiums that manage to handle massive crowds in a tight, urban setting. SU has it pretty easy by comparison. A study needs to be done because its too important and there’s too much at stake. They want you on the quad or miron.
