2025 Yankees Season

Volpe is the 2nd most valuable position player on the team as of now.
According to FanGraphs WAR, coming into today, it is Goldschmidt with 1.5 WAR. Grisham, Bellinger, and Volpe are tied at 1.3. It’s pretty darn close.

I'm really rooting for Wells, Volpe and some of the youngsters to break out and play well. Judge isn't going to bat .400 all season and when he slumps we're going to need folks to cover the slack.
Lombard is lurking to take Volpe's job in a year or two. Too lazy to google right now but I know there are some highly rated catchers in the system ready to take Wells' job around the same time Lombard gets called up in 2026 or 2027.

Maybe. Or he moves to 2B or 3B, as he's been doing at AA.

Yeah. Volpe is the 4th or 5th best SS in the AL right now. He’s been good. Volpe and Bellinger are right behind Judge and Goldy

What distinguishes ESPN's WAR from FanGraphs or others?

I can’t speak for ESPN WAR, but I know that FanGraphs and Baseball Reference differ mostly because of the defensive metrics they use to calculate WAR. I think FanGraphs uses Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR) and Outs Above Average (OAA). Baseball Reference uses Defensive Runs Saved (DRS). I’m not sure what ESPN uses, but I’m sure it’s an easy google.

Edit: I see ESPN just reports Baseball Reference WAR.

I didn't see the game, so can someone tell me why Weaver pitched in a non save situation? It's not like he needed the work.

Because Tim Hill is no longer in Boone's circle of trust?

Guessing that he was already warming up before Wells' sac fly in the 8th, so they just let him go.

Once he started warming up I'd rather him start the inning clean instead of the usual start the 9th with somebody else who puts 2 guys on base and then Weaver comes in anyway. This was Weaver's 6th appearance in 8 games. That combined with the Sunday-Monday combo I'm pretty sure Weaver is not available Tuesday night.

Probably not going to see Weaver until the Dodger series.Definitely not tonight and most likely he will get Wednesday off as well.I guess they could use him for 1 out Wednesday if the situation dictates it but I’d think he could use the reset.
I agree with you that I’d much rather see him start the inning rather than trying to clean up Hamilton’s mess.

Last year on this date, Volpe had a wRC+ of 127. He finished the season at 86.

Last year on this date, Wells had a wRC+ of 70 and finished at 105.
