2026 NCAA Selection Show Discussion / Rants

St. John's dismantled UCONN and instead of moving up to a 3, dropped to a 5? (not to mention they won both the overall conference title and the BET)
The big east was awful this year, like barely better than the wcc. They struggled ooc. Losing to Bama, isu, auburn and UK. I would have given them a 4 seed but 5 is not a stretch.

I have not deep dived into resumes this year. Regarding St. Johnls.

- The matrix had them 18 on the S-Curve, which is the same as the Committee. So I think that indicates the seeding is fair enough... difference between 16-18 was very minimal, so they could have been the final 4.

- But even if they had a been a 4 instead of a 5, their round of 32 match would have been a similar difficulty, perhaps even against Kansas as a 5. 12's are harder than 13's, so they have a bit tougher first round but if you are a contender it shouldn't matter.

That being said if they had been a #4 seed they would have been forced out of the East due to bracketing rules.

- The question then becomes whether they should have been a 3 which does change things, and would have taken them out of the East.

Are they better than Virginia at #3. Virginia is 8-4 in G1 as compared to St. Johns at 5-5,. St John's was 1-4 in OOC games that were Q1 and that hurt them as well as the BE being down. St. John's did have bigger elite wins than Virginia though.

The big thing though is that as a 4 seed they would be out of the East, which is perhaps a good thing.

One item that I was able to clear up last night regarding UConn and St. John's being in the same region.

The old rule that was the first rigid principle in setting brackets was that the three top teams from a conference had to be in a different region, no matter what seed they were. So St. John's whatever seed they were would not have been in the East.

The new rule is that the top 4 teams of a conference (that are also 1-4 seeds) have to be in a different region. So anyone below the #5 seed line is exempt from the rule.

Had St. John's been a #4 seed they would be in a different region.
