And lack of talent. Tell me who was good on last years defense. Even Samuels, who showed potential got beat up at times being a 17 year old.
Peal, AD, Tremble, Gary Bryant was solid, and Kerr, Buxton, and a few freshmen on the defensive line showed flashes. That’s about it for now, but we do have a few high school recruits coming in—Rodgers, Wilson, and Haskell—who could help strengthen the defensive line. Having a more experienced coaching staff who can actually develop players should make a big difference as well. That said, this first list of visitors is a little concerning.

I had high hopes for Bryant, but i thought he was a flop. Maybe the change in defense helps him. Also, disagree with Buxton. He consistently got beat. Those aren’t guys you can win with.

I love the potential in the 3 freshman you named, but both the EDGE rushers are going to need time in the S&C program to produce at this level. Same for Haskell.

Look at someone like Maraad. He had the size to compete as a true freshman, but even he didn’t really make that much of a difference. He’s a guy that could be a difference maker this year, and the following 2. It’s a tough transition from HS to P4.

Dang, sounds like we are cooked lol, hopefully we got some more guys who will visit. I like the UNLV edge he seems to be a prized as well.

Hopefully he plays in the league , he’s just on the PS now. I absolutely loved Meeks. Couldn’t ask for an anything more in a player, but he’s 1 out of how many others that flopped? For how many Meeks we’ve had i can name 5 flops. He was an outlier.
You can use that ratio for rosters as a whole. Most guys brought into a FB team don’t make meaningful contributions over their careers. Thats why they get recruited over

Let’s see who we get. Adam Mohammad from Washington would be a monster get at RB.

I should say i do like both our Canadian defensive lineman that played this year that will be sophomores. I liked when we signed them and was pleasantly surprised to see both get on the field this year. I think both will certainly be in the rotation, maybe starting, especially Nissi. Still, despite how much i like them, they’re still only potential at this point.

I loved this years class, but you aren’t going to win with true freshman. We somehow have to keep them until their juniors and possibly
seniors to maximize their potential.
That is why the portal is key. Huge difference in strength between most 18 and 22 year Olds. That does not even account for 3 or 4 years of college training and experience. The question is of all the guys who left, how many did HCFB want to retain.

Wasn’t Rickie Collins second string at LSU?

People need to stop worrying about about the school the player comes from. They’re second or third string for a reason.

Give me a kid that is a fit that has PLAYED GAMES over a kid that sits at a P4 school.

Case in point:
Jared Verse - Ualbany
Chamblis (QB at Ole Miss) - Division 2!!!
Can Skattebo - Sac State (I believe)

I could go on.
You’re picking out exceptions rather than the rule. The rule is that most of the best players are the highest rated players that go to the big schools

We can say whatever we want about the players, but I trust the new DC. He understands this is Power 4 football and knows he needs guys who can play at this level and execute his system the right way. We have experienced DBs, along with seasoned DC and DL coaches, and they’re going to coach every ounce of talent out of these guys to help them reach their ceiling. That said, we still need to add a couple of proven starters at DL and safety—especially since Hughes got hurt and had surgery, and the severity of that injury is still unknown.

No inside info. I’m hoping we see an Orange emoji tonight and a few more early this week. We’ve got the first visits on a few guys and with competition for a few spots, guys can’t take too much time.
Also there is a small window from now until classes start at most schools. Some schools start tomorrow others in a little over a week. I know Fran kept mentioning the 10th for football conditioning to begin. Players may have a little extra time but not if they going to be there for spring ball. I’m sure most programs don’t won’t to pay nil and then wait until June for a player to arrive.

I wouldn’t mind the TE from N. Mexico St, Gavin Harris. I think he’s a step down from Villari, but he’s serviceable.

Apparently,

Is it though?

A lot of those guys are visiting other P4 programs and they were solid contributors on their teams last year.

I would like to have seen double the number of visitors, especially since so many are from a lower level.

Seems like the next two days will be huge in this process. If we can lock in some of these visits and get a few commitments, it really opens the door to pivot toward other transfer targets and start building real momentum with the rest of the class. Early wins would take a lot of pressure off the staff and allow them to be more selective instead of reactive, which is exactly how you want to operate in the portal.
