you should have nothing to worry about, then! it isn't some high-level analysis that few people had the cheat code for. but it was said then by me and i'm sure others, and it's now 6 years old and still ticking. there's more possessions, certainly in the games where one team might want to shorten it. you have to make more stops. a goal, overall, is worth less.
none of that is to say there won't be low scoring games. somewhere close to 50% of a team's games are going to have a lower goal count than their average. the point is for when you get into a rockfight game, and your offense isn't clicking like normal, you stand a much better chance of weathering that storm if your squad has shown a superior ability at that end. so your low scoring sole example fits right in. you still manage 8, 9 or 11 instead of 6 or 7. and "have to" isn't meant to be taken literally like impossible. there will be example of a team overcoming it at some point. i think.
as far as benson, correlation doesn't equal causation but we get more correlation every year. eventually it might.
