2026 Winter Olympics: Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo

My 11 year old daughter who is not a sports fan at all got hooked on skiing last winter. She got up this morning and turned on the downhill racing training runs (which I didn’t know would be on, so she figured it out on her own). Apparently I will be watching a lot of skiing events this week.

There were a lot of great moments in that documentary - but to me the best one was when they showed the video to Dave Christian of his mother and sister starting the USA cheers before the hockey game vs the USSR. In about three seconds you can see in his facial expression as he went through about 12 emotions.

A close second would be seeing Steve Janaszak story about his Olympic experience.
So many emotional moments from these guys 45 years after the game. I was in college in 1980, so I'm around the same age as these guys, and just watching them, watching themselves from 45 years ago, bringing up memories that they might not have even remembered was very emotional. And the family stuff. So powerful.

And they didn't show it live.

I was 8 years old when the game was played, and have five older sisters. My sister Cathy worked that day at a KFC, so while those of us at home avoided any coverage - we knew some customer would have updated her on the outcome of the game. She got home shortly before the go ahead goal in the 3rd period. As soon as the goal was scored, I looked over at her for a clue on how the game was going to end - and she was totally stone faced. I thought “Oh, no - they’re not going to hold this lead”.

I watched the last ten minutes of the game certain the US was going to lose, getting increasingly confused and upset as the clock wound down that they blew it that late. It wasn’t until there was less than a minute left that I entertained the idea I was wrong…but it made the win just a little more special. As I was jumping around screaming and celebrating, another of my sisters asked Cathy why she’d stayed so stone faced and almost somber and through tears she said she didn’t want to spoil it for us, and REALLY wanted to see my reaction.

When I tell my kids that story, none of the details make any sense to them, it from a world so foreign to anything they’ve experienced. A game on tape delay is almost impossible for them to believe. But the emotions of the story - they get that.

And then you jumped on a rotary dial princess phone with the extra long cord so you could discuss the game with your friends.

Why didn't they just light the cauldron during Nessun Dorma!!!?

Nothing screams “Italian Winter Olympics” like two white women from Africa 🙄

Thank God I used blotter acid before watching .
I like that you felt the need to differentiate between "blotter" acid, and your run-of-the-mill lysergic acid diethylamine. Sign of a true connoisseur.

Wow! Cortina used to be one of the prime bobsled venues on the Wide World of Sports. The Wiki for Eugenio Monti, the driver of Italia #1 and always on WWS, says that the bobsled events weren't held in Squaw Valley due to "economic reasons (for the only time in the history of the Winter Olympic Games)."
I could swear Roger Moore Bond used his skis on that track. :)

She can. Her training run looked good today even though she held back. Shoot. Mogul skiers have no acls anymore and still rock out.

I remember reading an article in the WaPo about the reaction in Moscow to that game. Two best - One guy said, "Lyonya (Leonid Brezhnev) won't be very happy about that," and one woman said, "They look like children."
