2027 Recruiting

UNC out-of-state tuition is $41k versus $60-$70k at all of their ACC rivals, so they start with a 33% scholarship before handing out a dime. Its a Top 25 ranked academic institution in a Norman Rockwell college town with an amazing campus.

The sports teams are woven into the culture of the school with all of the stadiums, football, basketball, lacrosse/soccer, field hockey, baseball, softball and others in the center of campus. Students can attend most events for free and their attendance at events is tracked. The higher their participation in supporting the secondary sports, the higher their standing is to get tickets to basketball and other high demand/low availability events. So their is a culture inclusive of sport on campus.

Add Petro to this and you have a potent recruiting force.

I agree with 90% of this. UNC is my second favorite lacrosse school campus I've been on (after Denver). Chapel Hill was a true college town and i'd imagine for kids from the North, it's not culturally too bad given all the transplants. The low tuition is absolutely a benefit.

As for UNC sports, the lacrosse culture there (and Duke) pales in comparison to what SU can offer. Really only UMD can match us. We had over 5k for our first round game this past spring. UNC didn't break 2k.

I tend to think college rankings are vastly overrated (probably not to lax parents though). I got a chuckle out of nyclax 's comment about the Fodor twins going to Johns Hopkins (about the least fun school there is) while the parents were both Rutgers alums (it was a nice little burn). You can come up with a lot of reasons not to go to Rutgers, but the academic piece is pretty much pure vanity. I mean the parents found $70k per year to send the boys to Delbarton. They've obviously done pretty well with their Rutgers education. There are five to ten truly elite schools, after that it comes down to alumni networks and regional preferences.

I think SU is trying to sell the program the best way it can. Most successful program; best facilities; play for the greatest player ever (have at least four other guys in the coversation); spin the ball/place free; at the only school where lacrosse actually matters.

Barring special years it is going to be difficult for SU to consistently compete for “5 Star” talent.

The rankings skew towards elite prep schools, and elite prep schools skew towards elite academic institutions with high rankings. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Of the top 100 players, 30 might make sense for cuse, the staff might like 15 of them, and then they’re competing with Penn State, OSU, etc for those 15.

Not to mention they may have their own evals and not actually like every 5 or 4 star for various reasons.

My only criticism of SU recruiting is that I would love to see them court a few of the bigger midfielders, like an Asaro, to pair with the skill that March brings in. These middies are valuable as they can either look like Hugh Kelleher and ignite an offense, or, if they don’t work out, can learn defense and be effective clearing the ball and in transition (Peter Dearth). The Gait / March era has gone away from recruiting this archetype.

Aside from that it appears that they’ve done a good job picking off the talent that makes sense for the program.

Good post - I'd add (rather in a clumsy way) that there are some bought stars from over-zealous parents and some of the prep schools are running guys out there that are already balding. I won't give any examples in case we get a few of those :)

fwiw they did court asaro the problem is so did everybody else...and when thats the case UNC doesnt lose too often...

that said cuse's biggest competition for recruits right now isn't UNC but maryland...two schools with similar profiles...great legacy, good school but not in the elite tier, known for having top media/journalism programs...if a recruit is looking at cuse theres a good chance hes looking at maryland too especially with tillman's connections to upstate...from what ive gathered, over the last few years, cuse has lost more recruits to maryland than to any other school. goodberlet is a very recent example

Still hoping we flip Doshna somehow lol which was a bigger lose given he’s a 315 guy

The over the top pessimism at this stage is eerily similar to how people act when we go down like 4-1 in the first quarter of a game. About the only definitive thing you can say now is that UNC is a pain in the asz on the recruiting trail, but they have been that way for the last 15 years. Aside from them we are even with every other school at this point.

We do not even know if an attempt was made to recruit these guys that other schools are landing. Probably the only two where we did likely kick the tires were Riley Woods and the rochester guy who went to MD, but even then it is possible we had other main targets! People just pounce on a chance to be negative as hell without even knowing the situation. It is early as hell and we already have a couple nice recruits, including a guy in the top 10 that other schools were surely shooting for. Gotta just chill y'all!

Quillard may be what the doctor ordered in that category. Probably the closest two guys to that description in the 2024 class went down with injuries in Koby White and Matt McIntee. Maybe not huge guys, but certainly plus as athletes who have upside on both sides of the field. Kittelberger is a definite defense guy, but is certainly big strong and fast and could give us some dearth style plays in transition, despite being more defensive minded. McCarthy in 2023 has not blown us away on offense, but he did have a good year on the wings at faceoffs and could step up in a larger defensive role this year if needed. His 17gbs were just a couple off from Carter Rice. Again maybe not the biggest guy, but a D1 athlete who can keep up on both ends without question.

Some of the top (Ie IL top 100) Uncommited Players that we presumably still have a chance for in some form based on Social Media or other knowledge.

Once again, not saying we are in on all these guys, just that I have solid evidence that we might.

Ayden Matthews (M from Lawrenceville, Plays for Orangeville)
Cole Stankavage (A from Ardrey Kell, Follows Cuse Lax and plays for Sweetlax Upstate)
Kellan Bladon (Canadian A/M for Western Reserve, follows a lot of Cuse guys + Cuse Lax and also Cuse BBall, also wears 22 in High School, not that that really matters too much)
Evan March (lists Cuse as interested on IL)
Sean Currie (follows Cuse Lax, decent chance he chooses Football Over Lax as a primary focus as he's a high 3-star Tight end as well)
Jagger Zemachson (#1 LSM Recruit, from Seton Hall Prep,, follows a lot of Syracuse Guys + Cuse Mens Lax +3 additional Cuse Sports teams, got predicted to Duke early in the cycle)
Jake Calloway (D from Southampton Beach on Long Island, follows Cuse Lax)
Myles Goger (M from Severna, follows Cuse Lax)
Braydon Belski (M from Salisbury, follows Cuse Lax)
Danny Lucovich (A from Malvern Prep, follows Cuse Lax)
Grant Adams (M from Wheaton Academy(Illionis), follows Cuse Lax)
Cam Violante (M from Sommers, follows Cuse Lax)
Adrian Sweeny (M from CNS, pretty self explanatory)
March has commited to the Terps.
