2027 Recruiting

Have to flip someone now. This was not a good enough year recruiting on the offensive side of the ball. Need an attack who is a more guaranteed impact at the next level. We have the resources, we are trending up, cannot settle for this.

Two years really, no attack recruits in the class of '26 either (since Peck has technically switched classes)

Peck is a quality recruit and might as well be a 26. It is about keeping up with the Joneses and reloading from the 2022 guys moving on. It will take more than just Peck to accomplish that.

Penn State now with 4 attack and 2 mid commits in their class from the top 100. Not as egregiously crowded as UNC since their class of '26 had some gaps on offense.

For all the offensive firepower and the high scoring nature of the Cuse offense - it is surprising more offensive guys are not jumping at the chance to play in it.

I do anticipate some flips eventually, no inside info,

some of the UNC guys will have to figure out there is little to no playing time for them there.....right????

additionally, ND will have like 6 5 star Attacks at Once in 2028 if they all show up

SU men's lax has a lot of resources but from an NIL perspective they are lacking a bit as their share of the internal money being paid out by SU isn't as much as the staff wants. More scholarships were added but more $$ is needed for NIL. I tried to hint at this before, it's gonna be an issue with some 5 stars moving forward. Outside NIL money is going to be huge moving forward.

Bewildering to be honest. I know Matthews was a midfielder technically, so he wouldn't have directly solved that issue, but I can't really tell what is going on with that position. Kruger may be an attackman and be incorrectly listed on the IL Database, but the group seems impossibly shallow, especially considering that the big names in the ACC are grabbing multiple five star attackmen each year. We can't seem to get even one. I don't get it. Especially with at least two and maybe even three spots open next year, that should be a golden recruiting pitch. What is going on?

Not that these recruiting services are perfect about everything, but these are the only top 100 offensive players left in the IL 100:

83. A Brandon Sim - Chaminade (NY)
85. M James Riches - Valor Christian (CO)
88. M Barrett Mullahy - Fairfield Prep (CT)
93. M Sam Fox - Chaminade (NY)
99. M Conor Cook - St. Paul's (MD)

Additionally, there are seven uncommitted four star attackman and eight uncommitted four star midfielders. NLF also ranks Manhasset teammates Rocco Spallina (three star on IL) and Nolan Wieczorek (four star) and Sam Coluzzi (three star). They all play for Team 91 so there might be some club-based bias going on there.

The fact that Matthews is going to Penn State is not a surprise, but it stings considering they got some pretty talented players in Bladon and Richardson, two players I had my eye on.

Sorry to be negative. I really like what I've seen from the players SU has gotten, but it really feels like a missed opportunity this recruiting cycle. Feeling pretty frustrated if I am being honest. Matthews would have made up for a lot.

We have the cash for the most coveted goalie in Sobel but not a top offensive player? I am sure money is a factor on some level but it just feels like we whiffed at attack. I doubt the reason we don’t have one is because we blew all our money on Sobel. Feels like there must be cash to spend and we just whiffed on multiple attack recruits.

Matthews likely plays the rest of high school as attack. Similar to Anderson who started at middie and moved down when older top talent graduated.

I think with Sobel it cant be discounted that we lined up perfectly with what he wants to study, one of the greatest things that could happen to this program is convincing people that Sports Management isn't some easy fake major for athletes, because we happen to be elite at it and thats what Sobel wanted to study.

I'm sure there is likely a # of reasons SU has struggled recently to bring multiple high end attackmen. Anderson and Peck were both excellent 5 star prospects but as you noted UNC, UVA, Duke have little issue bringing in multiple high end attackmen each year and while we are usually averaging 1 per class. It's been a struggle beyond that or to bring in multiple high end 5 starts at say midfield to make up for it, again averaging about 1 per class there as well. Certainly there's a case to be made that at some point all of these attackmen wont' end up at the same school (your seeing this already at UVA and likely to happen at UNC in the near future) but simply put the recruiting by Gait and while good hasn't been where it needs to be certainly not where it should be coming up a final four appearance. Finishing 5 out of 5 every year in the ACC isn't gonna be sustainable in the long term despite how well we've played the last 2 years (for the most part).

NIL is an issue but also feels like there is more to it. Staff needs to figure it out and fast.

Correct, he's also a Syracuse fan. There's a reason SU was the rumored favorite before 9/1. Certainly we had the $$ to make it stick but that wasn't the big play here.

Megamillions is $450 mil this week.

Get cracking.

1. People seriously overstate the weather
2. Academic rankings have fallen
3. Yeah we made the Final 4 this year, but its the first time since most of these kids were 5 years old
4. We are hitting a point where these recruits, even if they were raised in a LAX crazy household don't even have coherent memories of SU being a championship team.
5. The constant online hatred on Instagram and Twitter/ X about how much we have underperformed does get to people in this generation.
6. We need more money, but that goes for essentially everything at this university and the current political climate is not helping with that.
7. Upstate NY is not an exciting place to be these days, so we have a harder time getting people up here and if they are from here they often want to leave

There are many other issues, but these are just some I can get off the top of my head

Most if not all of these have been factors in all of our recruiting classes of at least the last 5-7 years, but we still found a way to make up for it. Heck you could say that about Upstate NY and social media haters for a looong time. But the on campus experience for students at cuse is still quality. Penn state kids are going out to Happy Valley in the middle of nowhere where it is truly just the campus. Think we still have what it takes to keep up here and just missed on a couple key guys we were close to landing. A flip or two in the coming months would go a long way. Feel good about midfield and defense/rope unit in these last three classes. Just need a little more at strictly attack.
