24 Team CFP?

4 was perfect
I'd be perfectly happy going back to the 1980's, small/compact conferences, bowl games with history and luster, and no tournament to determine a single champion, with all the chaos that could entail. And have everything done on January 1 for heaven's sake.

To me it feels like adopting a playoff was a cheap attempt to make football like hoops... which is a step down IMO.

I hate the idea of expanding to 24. I don’t want to ruin the sacred college football regular season by 8-4 teams making the cut. I see 12 as a sweet spot.

But the system in the 1980s was terrible also. Split national champions, 1 and 2 often not being able to play each other due to Rose Bowl commitments, undefeated teams being left out, etc. Any system where a team can “claim” a championship is fundamentally stupid.

I do 100% agree with you that the smaller conferences with regional identity was way better.

Nah. 4 wasn't really a playoff. It was a bloated BCS. I'd also be ok with 8. What I really want is smaller conferences that aren't geographically idiotic. Give me those and get rid of the dumb conference championship games, and 16 makes sense. The first round takes the place of the conference championship games.

16 works. No bye’s, all first round games on campus. The Big 10 douchenozzles are insisting on it going to 24 after a few years and that is screwing things up
It adds a full 4 games to the season. That’s an extra 33% more games. I get most of the players now are paid and many a lot on the teams that would be competing but that’s a lot of extra mileage on the body before they even enter REAL pro ball.

They need to do away with conference games if they are planning to expand.

It's no more than what we already have for teams that don't get byes. Miami played 4 games in the playoff this year.

Everyone above 500 gets to go to a bowl for an extra game. 24 team playoff. Makes sense for everyone.

More football, more inclusion, more money. Too 8 seeds get buys. Which is incentive for the regular season. Players will be more likely to go to other teams.

And it was fun to sit in a bar and argue over "who's number 1" and why the press rankings didn't agree.

Call me old-fashioned, but isn't it way more fun to settle that on the field?

Like in 1994, two elite undefeated teams, Penn State and Nebraska, didn't play. That is a travesty. Or in 1987, we would have been part of a theoretical playoff, but instead we were relegated to a quasi exhibition game.

The top teams should face the top teams the regular season doesn’t matter anymore because 12 team can make it. Go back to 4

A 24 team playoff is way too big given the current conferences. Also if you are going to 24, you better be taking every conference champ. Even if that is the case, do we really need FOURTEEN at larges?

Even if conferences made sense (14 ten team conferences making up FBS), going to 24 would still be too many IMO.

The rhetoric that the regular season doesn't matter is bunk. Tell the 140 teams that didn't make the playoff that the regular season didn't matter. In a 4 team playoff does the regular season matter when a legit contender is left out because they're ranked 5th?

But if old Penn State and Nebraska alums and fans ever get together, they will again discuss who was the better team and who got "screwed". I think that's great!

16 is the absolute sweet spot. Perfect symmetry, no byes, lots of home games in incredible environments.

Screw the bowls.

Don’t lose games and you won’t be left out
