In my humble opinion the next coach will only get a 3 year contract.. there will be a new chancellor within that time ans so will a new AD..

With NIL and the portal, the timeline has definitely shrunk. You need to produce inside of 3 seasons.

I’m not saying you need to go 3 year contract - go 5, just try not to get stung if you want to get out of it after 3 if you’re Syracuse.

It is what it is. We are going to give a 5 year contract. If the guy is a dud, we are going to be stuck.

There’s truth to that statement but I don’t agree with it throughout. Who it is matters. You go with someone like Chesney who’s trying to elevate and you should have more leverage negotiating the contract.

White isn't coming here for a 3 year contract. Contracts are standard 5 years.

I don't believe that any coach is going to come here and risk daminging their long term value for a 3 year deal. I just don't. We don't have the leverage here.

I never said give a 3 year deal.

Then, we will not get out top 45 choices. No one is going to go to Syracuse for a 3 year deal. I'm not sure I would and I'm already old and in no way qualified.
I, too, am old and unqualified.

I'd take that deal in a minute.

Just might send in a tape of me screaming at my TV set...

I was responding to the original OP who did say 3 year deal. It will be a 5 year deal unless we get a dope. And that would mean more trouble.

You don't have the standards that I do. Plus, it would mean I would have to give up playing casino poker 3 to 4 times a week. They have got to give me 5 years for that.

Yeah…less than a five year contract would be unbelievably stupid.

I worked with a guy who took a two year contract job at a place that was a hellhole. I asked him why he did that, and there were two reason - they massively overpaid him market rate, and he planned to retire in two years so he didn’t care much if he “succeeded” anyway.

That’s probably the blueprint for a three year contract - massively overpay an old guy who doesn’t care to do the job right because he plans to be done coaching in three years regardless.

The one pitch we have after Dino is we don’t pull the trigger early, so you’ll have runway to turn the program around. A three year contract takes that pitch and implodes it, basically telling candidates we’ve been patient in the past - but those days are over. Win now or you’re toast.

Guys trying to elevate also have the ability to say we’ve been one of the worst programs in college football for two decades - while it’d be a feather in his cap to turn the program around, we can crap in our hat if we think he’ll do it for a shorter term contract than industry standard.

In other words - we don’t have leverage on contract length. None. At all.

Does anyone read? I said a 5 - yr deal that allows you to get out after 3 without being stung. And DEPENDING on the candidate, you could have some leverage with that negotiation.

And sure, any one candidate can say anything, if they don’t want the job then they don’t want the job.

feel free to explain how a three-year contract versus a five-year contract with no buy out after three years is any different at all in the view of the coach.

It’s just an incredibly stupid idea, with absolutely no chance of happening

Nobody will take the job for less than 5 years. Most will ask for 7, then you hope you can talk them down to 5 if you throw enough money at them

Incredibly stupid? Show me again where I said no buyout… To try to get a lower buyout in years 4 & 5 has no chance of happening? Glad you don’t negotiate contracts for our business.

On 2nd thought… you’re 100% correct. We’re such a low level college program, we’d be lucky to pull in any warm body to coach us without offering the Santa Maria packed with 36 Million worth of gold shekels, a 9 year guarantee tied to a Billion dollar buyout. I really hope that will entice someone to come coach this destitute program.

Give me a break.

I'd put him on a game-to-game contract. Two losses in a row? He's out. Really light a fire under this guy so people know we mean business.
