#44

Ok - keep it in the rafters. Stomp out the excitement/conversation. Bc lord knows there’s been a lot of that around the football team over the past 3 years.

God we could screw up PBJ sandwiches.

The conversation will continue as long as ST keeps putting up the numbers.

Give it to him today and the conversation stops tomorrow.

Couldn’t disagree more. The conversation IS over today bc ADJW ended it today.

He’s having the season he’s having now. You willing to bet the team will be better and so will he next year? Because neither of those are certain.

And I’m not sure how much CUSE football you’ve watched, but we haven’t had a ton to be excited about.

Exactly! So #44 is apparently not about Syracuse. It is about a very small number of guys and what they and their families want. You can go into any establishment on campus and buy a 44 shirt. If you told me they were selling them in the Hall of Languages, it would not surprise me. On the other hand, good luck finding a new #9 Don McPherson shirt or a new #5 Donovan McNabb shirt or a new #47 Joe Morris shirt. They changed the freaking zip code to 13044 for crying out loud and it seems as though it does not mean what we thought it did.

We have built up a whole cottage industry surrounding the number 44 and as it turns out the tail is really wagging the dog. If four families can control what is our most notable tradition, perhaps it means less than it should. Make no mistake, I have NO problem honoring the individual great #44's as players, especially Ernie Davis. None whatsoever. Beyond that, it seems like the rest of the concept is being devalued a bit.

It’s not just being devalued, it’s being overcomplicated. Gross put together a committee in 2013 to oversee when it could possibly be used again? Sala said it’s unretired in 2015? Now Wildhack is having meaningful conversations with the board and the families and it’s way too early in the process?

What twilight zone are we in? As I said earlier, Gross must have made some big promises that are tied to $, because otherwise none of this makes sense.

Maybe we need a new AD who appreciates tradition. 44 was a tradition not something owned or controlled by 1 or 2 former players. 25 former players have worn 44. 44 should be owned by the program, the university and the fans with the coaches making the final decision.

Dino never should have opened it up for discussion.

Tucker is more worthy than many to wear 44.

Yep, it's just a number. A number that we have blown way out of proportion but a number none-the-less. I even get the idea of not doing it mid-season. I just find the AD's rationalization a bit unexpected and as you say, overcomplicated.

Potential secondary benefit of giving Tucker the 44 sooner than later.

I think it would REALLY elevate him that much further as a legit Heisman candidate. Like...statistically he is now. But...if he is also the guy that the 44 came back for, that becomes that much bigger a national story. And I think the more big good stories we can get the better right now, both for his individual Heisman chances, and for the rep of the program.
If he's a Heisman candidate it will be because of his performance on the field, no matter what number he is wearing. Another possibility is that he has a weak performance, for whatever reason, and all this hype and buildup goes down the drain.

Wildhack is a smart guy. There's something more to this. Maybe they setup Forty Four, LLC, and the 4 families are on the board that has to vote to dissolve.

As the AD, Wildhack needs to be making decisions that are in the best interest of the program. NOT appeasing grumpy old guys who have little to no impact on SU football anymore. This is turning into a disaster.
The same grumpy old guys that you want tucker to be compared to?

For anyone who wants to make their opinions known. And this email is publicly listed on the SU website. I know I will be sending a very respectful well worded email. Hope you all do the same

Just so angering.

This is upsetting as is, but keep in mind we’ve now entered the NIL too. Awful.

Apparently I don't know the rules here and can't post an email address? But anyways, his email is listed here.

If its over then why are we still talking about it?

And, you're telling me that if Tucker continues to put up the numbers, people aren't going to talk about it?

I think...
  • People will keep talking about as long as he continues to put the numbers up.
  • The conversation will continue into the offseason with a push for him to get #44 for the 2022 season.
  • Somewhere between now and the start of the 2022 season, Tucker will be given #44.
  • Tucker will stay at CUSE (not enter the portal) to collect the related NIL endorsements.
  • CUSE will mount a "Sean Tucker for Heisman" campaign for 2022.

Yes, I am willing to bet we will be better in 2022.

Lot of thinks… not many 44’s. Bad decision.
