#44

I already did, posted his response a few comments back.
Great. Everyone needs to email Wildhack and have the fans opinions felt. Respectfully of course. I will be.

Lot of thinks… not many 44’s. Bad decision.

Still talking about it?

Yes, I can think. Exactly which of those thoughts do you disagree with?

You will not be getting "many 44's" There is only one (at most you can have two).

So, are you going to bet against this team in 2022?

More thoughts on this.

1. It would be a very nice "gesture" to inform the 4 families (and the 4 families are not by my choice) of the decision first. But the number belongs to SU and is a wonderful branding opportunity for football. The number was worn in honor by those 4 players and the greatest honor for them should be to have another great player follow in their footsteps and wear the "44".

2. So another thought...if "44" is worn for a special occasion or as a reward to a player, are you really unretiring it? Maybe you are "borrowing" it.
So it becomes like that Miami turnover chain. After a player has a particularly strong game they earn the "44" jersey for the following game.

3. Another thought is if we were to make a bowl game that the player gets "44" for the bowl game.

4. And lastly, when Wildhack says it is way too premature, with the movement and early departures for the pros, maybe by the time you think the player is ready, they are ready to leave and you were too late.

You’re going off the rails literal. Yes I’m talking about it because the decision was just released. Nobody’s going to pine over it for the next 9 months, it’s an after though bc he dropped the hammer on it.

Easy on the condescending tone, dad.

my own personal feeling is they want to reward the player for a complete season not just a few great games as anyone can one 1/2 breakout games. but also didnt want to ask the family this week with the celebration

You're right. It will never be spoken of again. LOL

Sure, I'll go easy on the condescending tone.

"And I’m not sure how much CUSE football you’ve watched, but we haven’t had a ton to be excited about."

Wildhack is a smart guy. There's something more to this. Maybe they setup Forty Four, LLC, and the 4 families are on the board that has to vote to dissolve.

yep. There’s something we don’t know, because it is just a number so it would seem simple. But it’s not obviously. I’m more upset with the guy who retired it in the first place.

But, but - that’s not tradition!!

44 was given to HS recruits who had achieved exactly nothing in college, yet.

And - roughly HALF of the 44’s since Jim Brown are literally WHO??-level players that nobody beyond the oldest and hardest-core fans would even be familiar with their names.

It never ceases to amaze me at just how inept SUAD is at things that should be really, really simple.

I'm guessing Konrad wants to be the last to wear it, and I'm guessing donation money was involved during the original retirement.

Konrad has cash money, and could be a big donor they don't want to upset

The other problem we have is that when talking about 44, only Brown, Davis, and Little are ever mentioned. Michael Owens was more than Bill's brother...ask any fan who was at the SU-WVU game in 1987 which 44 scored the 2-pointer that preserved the undefeated season. Rob Konrad may not have been a great 44 tailback but he was one of the greatest SU fullbacks and he wore #44.

The other problem about #44 is that some great players get lost in the shuffle; neither the great Joe Morris nor the too-often overlooked Walter Reyes wore 44. They are the top two rushers in SU history but they never get mentioned during TV games. No reason why either should not be mentioned in the same breath as the guys who have statues at Plaza 44. We should not make the same mistake with Sean Tucker.

If we are going to have a tradition, it should be a living tradition and the guys who really deserve to wear the number get a chance to do so.
You are in fire today, Dick! Did you double up on the Ensure this morning?

Well, if that were to be the case...then that would be super petty by Rob. Like...childish.

I realize thats just a guess

Please don’t let me jinx it. I think If Tucker can go off tonight (125-150 & 2 TD’s?) vs Clemson on ESPN in prime time, then it’s possible we might start seeing some more Heisman buzz. Ok, I’ll shut up now.

Literally zero chance

no offense to Tucker, just reality

I think Chip nailed it. There are behind the scenes financial issues likely at play. Perhaps the 44's and their estates get a piece of the pie whenever 44 merch is sold or whatever. Sean might be better served getting paid for his own number, as it seems it is less about an SU tradition and more about other things. Anyway, no 44 with be forthcoming this year so it is time to move on.
