Based on Desko's short preview of Hobart it sounds like were in for a goalie split tonight. However, I wouldn't be shocked if Molloy started and played most of the game. Reading between the lines so to speak it sounds like they want to give Molloy a chance to prove himself ala Wardwell two year ago. Hopefully this game goes better then that one did.
It's a tough call on the staff's part. I agree that Molloy should get a shot but outside of the Binghamton game in a few weeks I am not sure there is a great matchup for this to happen. Starting your first game at night on the road at Hobart in a must win situation is less then ideal. Still perhaps benching Warren gets him fired up if Molloy struggles and he has to come in.
No idea what were looking at from a SSDM standpoint. Grimm's status is a complete unknown and if I had to guess I would think he's probably out. If that's the case the position could be in for a world of hurt tonight. Hopefully the staff has been giving D'agostino some run at the position this week in practice. Gillis and Ciferri are really going to have to step up.
Two guys I want to see have big game tonight are Ben Williams and Dylan Donahue. Being the focus point of every opposing team these year they have understandably struggled at times and Williams appears to have been less then 100% the last few weeks. Huge opportunity for these guys to re-establish themselves today especially Williams.
Few other players/positions I am keeping an eye on
Wing play - Has been a disaster the last two weeks and was absolutely putrid last week vs ND. We were out fought and outhustled badly by ND last week. Seems like this a recurring theme with this team/program now going back to the graduation of Joel White and Kevin Drew. At this point the staff should keep changing up the personnel until we find a combo that fits.
Big opportunity for Jordan Evans tonight after breaking out a bit vs ND in the second half (albeit in a lopsided score) he has a chance to put together two solid games in a row which would go along way to help a team looking for answers.
I am also waiting to see what role Nick Piroli will play after FINALLY getting back on the field late vs ND. I doubt he will start but I really hope he can play significant minutes, him initiating really frees up Dylan.
Lastly I want to see how the staff responds in this game. Are there meaningful changes? Do we see some new wrinkles? Is Coach Desko more animated or fired up? Does this team come out ready to play or are we down 2-0 in the first 5 minutes?
As I mentioned in a different thread this is a decent Hobart team that if everything breaks right can certainly put a scare into this team and even win the game. That said they clearly have holes/issues that a talented Syracuse team should take advantage of and ultimately get the win. Hobart has very little quality depth especially on offense and from the midfield they really only have 1 major scoring threat. Mullins and Mellen will draw Brown and Aslanan (sp?) respectively who are Hobarts two main threats and best offensive players. Both are attackmen and both fit the profile of players Mullins and Mellen have matched up with this year. Defensively SU needs to impose its will, this Hobart team was basically shut down by St. Joes on offense a few Saturday's ago in their last game. There is no reason we can't do the same.
