Games are on Thursday and Saturday. Saturday is St. Patrick's Day and there is a parade downtown not too far from the Consol Center. The route doesn't go near the arena but it will bring a lot of people into the downtown area and into the bars and restaurants.
There are some great deals right now on Hotels.com and Orbitz for rooms. There are a few downtown to choose from and for example they had the Wyndham on one site for $159 a night and the Renaissance for $179 a night. I went on Priceline and got a 4 star hotel downtown for $100 a night. It's the Westin and it's not the best Westin in the world, but it's still only $100 and it's walking distance to the Consol Center and all of which downtown offers. Plus the nice thing about Priceline is that you can get insurance for $5 a night if you want to cancel your room.
I checked the Marriot downtown and a couple others and they were all over $300 per night.
If you don't want to stay downtown, there are some great deals either by the airport or in the Greentree area. The downside is that you will need to drive downtown for the games and with the normal Thursday work traffic and the parade on Saturday, you could run into some potential problems.
If you haven't been to Pittsburgh there are quite a few things to do. One thing to put on your list is the incline up Mt Washington. The view up there is incredible and there are quite a few great "fancy" restaurants to eat at. It's unique since there are few places like this.
Station Square and The Waterfront in Homestead are two different areas that have a lot of bars, restaurants and other entertainment options. If you leave downtown, you would most likely head out to one of those areas for your evening entertainment. However, downtown has "the strip" which also has a bunch of bars and restaurants.
Towards the airport is Robinson Township which also has a ton of shopping and bars/restaurants. If you are staying out that way, this would be a good option.
Another option downtown is the new River Casino that opened next to Heinz field. It's technically within walking distance from the downtown hotels, but late at night you would probably want to take a taxi. I think they might have shuttles but am not 100% sure. This is a relatively brand new casino that has full gaming: slots, craps, blackjack, poker, roulette, etc so it's not like all of the ones in NYS.
Hopefully we end up in Pittsburgh. It's a great place to spend a few days.
