2019 NFL Draft Player Profile: Eric Dungey

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

NAME: Eric Dungey

SCHOOL: Syracuse

CONFERENCE: ACC

POSITION: Quarterback

CLASS: Senior

JERSEY: No. 2

RECRUITMENT RATING: 3-star

HT: 6’4

WT: 228 lbs

D.O.B.: 6/12/1996

Syracuse’s all-time leader in 300-yard passing games and passing yards per game (248.9), producing when on the field has never been an issue for Dungey. Missing parts of the last three seasons on account injuries, staying on the field has been problematic.

Thriving in Dino Babers’ spread offense that is predicated on spacing, Dungey has done well as a distributor that can also make plays with his feet. Whether it’s a quick hitter or vertical shot, Dungey has a good feel for the spacing and timing of the offense and features a quick trigger.

Syracuse’s offense is lacking in terms of NFL concepts and Dungey operates in a quarterback-friendly system.

When Dungey is tasked with working his progressions and making throws with anticipation, the results are inconsistent. A good portion of Dungey’s production comes as a result of his ability to create with his legs, keeping plays alive and either taking off as a runner or hitting a target that breaks free.

Overall, Dungey has modest accuracy which he gets away with due to the space created for him by passing game concepts. He does flash the ability to hit touch throws into space. His arm strength is ordinary and he doesn’t drive the football to deeper windows with overly impressive velocity.

If Dungey can stay healthy, there is no reason to believe he can’t put together a productive season as a senior. Avoiding injuries and showcasing a more translatable skill set is critical for Dungey to get a serious look for an NFL opportunity.

-Joe Marino

This has been discussed but do you agree with Mr. Marino's evaluation and what he has to say here taking into account the games Dungey has played so far this season? Eric is not listed in any top 10 possible 2019 draft projections that I have found. Obviously with wins over Clemson and Pitt would have served him better. Also his injuries probably have NFL coaches at arms length.

This might offend some, but I pretty much agree with the assessment. Love Dungey as a college player, but I'd be really surprised to see him get drafted. Hope I'm wrong.

Top 10 draft projections? You think he would be anywhere close to the top 10 even in draft projections?

His assessment is exactly what I've thought of him. I think it's spot on. I think he'll get a crack at a camp somewhere as a very late round selection, or UFA .

Every year, developmental QBs get taken with less talent than Dungey. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I could see him go somewhere but not as a qb. Mechanics aren’t clean. T end or fb.

Accurate. He may go CFL or try and change positions. Or he can just move on with life after college football.

He has the size but accuracy and speed isn't there this year for whatever reason. I think the system is great for QBs, gives a lot of discretion for decision making which must be valuable for reading defenses. Loads of opportunity to showcase talent as well. Not sure where a system that favors an up tempo offense does anything but speak to a QBs ability to play in a fast paced environment.

That list was last updated on 4/26/18
Didn't see a date. On one that was labeled as updated Oct. 11, No orange in any top 25, by position. Why I posted this one... (seeing as we're going off an Aug. 1) But yeah, the OP seems fair.

Fair OP. His biggest strengths are leadership and will to win. Too many major red flags though. Mechanics, accuracy, durability, etc.

I imagine if people don’t think he should play against UNC they don’t see him in a Giants uniform.

That's true. Heck my Bills have been looking for a QB since Jim Kelly. If I'm wrong and he gets drafted, I'll be the first to come back and eat crow and be thrilled. Our NFL alums have thinned considerably so would love to see it happen.

You cant overlook that he has much of what the NFL wants but accuracy issues and not elite arm strength are killer.. Like any sport these days though there ae guys who fix both of those things, and fixing his footwork if thats all he works on, maybe it can be done.

I guess my question is why isn't the footwork and "clean up" things being addressed here?

Makes me wonder if his foot is still bothering him from last year? He had it rolled on vs WMU and it would make sense that would also screw up mechanics if he still is having problems with it.

He's not going into the NFL as a TE or FB. The talk of this each year, is just insane.

Maybe he's bulking up to get ready to be a big possession receiver. TE is tough but if basketball guys can make the transition, then maybe he can.

His accuracy and arm strength are going to hold him back in addition to his health.

With his frame, he could possibly play FB at the next level. He'd be a small tight end. I think that after this season, it is the end of the line for him.
