It's been pointed out on a number of occasions that perhaps Bernie leaving has had a big impact on Hopkin's development of the Big Men.

What we're missing here is that this has to have helped Hop evolve himself.
His work with our guards is well renowned, his ability to land recruits and his motivation is unquestionable. It's a new challenge that Hopkins is clearly taking head on. His hoops IQ is showing right now and JB's intuition is shining brightly. I think this speaks volumes as to his flexibility and what kind of Coach he will be in the future.

The X factor in all of this is the Head Coach has to be the number one fan of this team. You're heart has to be invested otherwise it shows. When you see these guns for hire like Calimari, Self and Pitino they just look so smug. Of course you want to hate them. JB's legacy will live on through Hop.

It's good to be a Cuse fan!

I was with you until the last paragraph. You realize that Self was a an assistant for KU, and that Pitnio has been at Lville for over 10 years? HIRED GUNS

even cal,as much as i dislike him, did nothing wrong moving up the ladder

both craig esherick and george blaney have about 900 wins between them as head coaches. hopkins 0. and he's how old? where were boeheim, pitino, calimari and self at this point of their careers? he's a lifetime assistant coach so far.0 wins.

like coaching a team plagued with recruiting violations then leaving just before the storm of penalties came down?

George Balney won 350+ during his 22 years at Holy Cross. Perhaps another 40 at SH. Esherick won less than 1oo at Georgetown. That's a lot less than 900 between them.

I peg Hop at about 40...not that old.

pitino was 24 when he was an assistant here. 26 as a head coach.
(well technically he was interim head coach at hawaii before being hired here at 23.)

If the argument is Hopkins won't be as good a coach as Pitino, I hope you won't get many people disagreeing with that. But that doesn't mean Hop can't be a very good coach.

I think it's more an observation of their characters and their pasts. You may be right with Self but I live in Chicago and that name still raises the ire of hardcore Illini fans

Hop graduated in 1992, so you're just about spot on. He's about 40 or 41.

And what people need to keep in mind is that Hop could have been a head coach by now but has turned down opportunities because he wants to be at SU, and especially over the last four or five years, since he knows he's going to immediately inherit one of the best basketball programs in history. You can't really blame him for not leaving before now.

What I really really like is the intensity that SU plays on defense. The 2009-2010 and this team seem committed to defense and floor burns. In the past 3 years I think I've seen more players go to the floor to fight for a loose ball than I have since Mike Hopkins himself played and before him too.

Watching Fab throw himself on the floor to gain possession of a loose ball is so impressive.Dion, CJ etc don't hesitate going to the mat for a possession. Whether it's a combination of an increasing influence of Mike Hopkins aggressive, competitive, intense coaching (a reflection of how he played) and JB coaching with Coach K in the Olympics who always emphasized defensive intensity, I really enjoy watching these kids play and play hard. Well done.

I'm a bit worried how back loaded SU's schedule is. Hoping we stay healthy and committed. Our last 7 games of the regular season include Georgetown, Louisville twice, UConn twice and a pretty tough USF team. Staying focused and healthy is so important. Hopefully playing so many bodies should really help us not wear down and be as vulnerable to late season injuries as our competitors.

That's a great point. The BE schedule is always a physical grind and it's easy for teams to get worn down, especially when you add in the BET, so having so much depth is HUGE. It enables JB to rest people and keep legs relatively fresh throughout the year.

So why are they now assistant coaches?

well you saw last nights game. i guess the point being is that just becuz someone happens to be a well qualified (even battle tested) assistant coach doesn't mean they can win squat.

the other thing that has become pretty clear if Hop replaces Boeheim as he most likely will, GMAC will be coaching the guards for some time, probably until he takes over as a head coach at some point, probably about 7-8 years, IMO

I think Hop played 1993-1993 as his last year at SU ... still would make him 40. maybe he'll put a hit out on JB. Hop has had other opportunities at other jobs ... smaller schools yeah but that is the occupational ladder for coaches. I think the guy bleeds orange like the rest of the coaches and he knows for certain that he is the heir to a top flight school and program.

Name one school that he turned down!!

P.S.--------- I never saw a confirmation from St. Bonaventure that he was offered the job.

Off the top of my head. Boston, St Bonnie, UNC Charlotte. And an offer doesn't have to be formally written to turn it down

Sent from my DROIDX

Tell me you are not that out of the loop?? Hop was offered over a million to coach Charlotte. My friend, I know this for certain. He was also, as Bees pointed out, offered the Bonnies job. P.C. sniffed around before they hired Cooley. Jb shot that down if you remember.

Wow, a whole lot of pissing around about Hop's lack of a record. He will be the next head coach, whether you like it or not. You have a choice, accept it, stop being a fan, or become an Igor. Whether i agree or not, two of those options are so unpalatable, that i choose to accept it as being reality. I suggest for your own sake's, you do the same.

Yeah? Who's doing this renowning? Just how can a position coach ever demonstrate that his efforts are having an effect, and what metric is used in defining it? Are we assuming that because Dion's having a nice (early) season that it's because of Hop's work with him? It's a bit of a leap to assume a highly-regarded recruit wouldn't have evolved to this point with some other, lesser coach behind him.

No Dion, Fab, CJ's etc improvement is obviously the result of the fans cheering better and louder. Coaches are only responsible when players regress or don't perform up to expectations.

What does this tell us about anything?
