A Thought on Dino's Contract

I think we need a HC with an OL background. They can ID OL recruits and also coach them up.

Look at what Marrone did here. He also left Shafer with plenty on the OL. It is what got us to a Bowl that year. We haven’t had as much talent since. That has been what holds us back. With better coaching we are 8-5 that year with fewer blowouts too.

Also going back further the mad scientist DeLeone was able to piece together an OL. We need something like that.

If he has a decent year next season, I wouldn’t mind Moorhead as HC and Addazio as OLC. I think that could work.

Also why not consider Outten along with Addazio as OLC? Outten has our system from 2012. He has NFL game planning experience. He knows OL. He would have Addazio who understands SUs limitations, knows how to run a program, knows Northeast recruiting, and knows OL.

Moorhead is a good OC, not sure with regard to a HC but yeah see what he does next year. He's been around long enough to know the Northeast, maybe he has some different ideas that could work here with regard to development/ recruiting, he would have to bring more to the table than just his resume. Defense would be a major question. Seems like another retread really but could do a lot worse (Maybe). Interesting resume though and plenty of experience. He was pretty damn good at MSU and inherited a total gut and rebuild at Akron. Worth an interview for sure

I just don't like Addazio, such an old meathead who seems to be growing out of touch as the years go by. Don't see Wildhack really being an Addazio guy either. Too much dude!

I think IthacaBarrel 's posts have been spot on. A case for sticking with Dino is that literally no one in the game knows the challenges facing an SU head coach better than him. I also agree that the whole "CEO" thing ain't working exceedingly well. This job demands a HC that gets his hands dirty and I'm not sure Dino's been cut out for that.

this is spot on. The guy we have knows the job is hard and is willing to push the rock up the hill to keep us competitive and somewhat relevant with his positive outlook, great persona with the media and former players/current players seeming to love him and defend him.

I do think the job is a heavy lift for anyone that has been a lifer because this is a tour of duty. One best fit for a young guy with vision and ability to coach up marginal talent game 1-12. I think we lose perspective with how loony a person Paul Pasqualoni was with his sleeping in the office weekly and not being married. The guy was literally married to the Syracuse gig for many years. At the time in the 90s he was making water into wine with a team that is not in the hotbed of college football.

I don't think Dino is Paul, he's more of a Dick Mac type character. The big diff being Mac was a new englander with the ability to penetrate this recruiting area with maximum success. Not sure Dino has done it as well on the recruiting front.

Anyway, ad naeusuem but i'm not sure what the right track is because if we fire Dino the program will take time getting back on the tracks. This isn't a 1 year turnaround ala Alabama. It's a tougher lift to completely change the vision of the Dino program

Doesn't a pass-heavy offense require big, agile linemen that are in short supply and in demand by all the factories? I'm starting to understand why Deleone went all in on 300 different blocking schemes. It's easier to find big nerds who only need to hold their block for half a second if they can confuse the other guys by being multiple.
leach has done it consistently forever in the middle of nowhere

Lots of big programs in the south/Texas/etc are in the middle of nowhere. But that’s still fertile recruiting territory. Jesus would still use TCU as an example of where to plant the mustard seed.

Ever been to Pullman, WA? only fertile thing in the Skagit Valley is the ground for growing potatoes. It's in the middle of nowhere. I would say a tougher sell than Syracuse. Leach is tried and true. Insane? sure but he gets it done in tough areas. Texas tech ain't no peach either but yeah it is in Texas but he was picking at left overs for many years there. You find a young Mike Leach and that's a game changer.

Other than that, I think you need to find a unicycle to have real success at Syracuse a modern day forward thinking meathead with a head on his shoulders.

It's not going to be easy by any means if you want to try and find an exceptional head coach and you can't get your money back!

recruiting is always a reason to not do a passing offense but it's never a reason to not do ground and pound

I don’t think any coach who comes in here without extensive knowledge of this program its predicament and short comings understands how difficult the job actually is. Nor did Dino regardless of what is said and I think it can be very frustrating.

not sure who the next coach will be but they better do a better job of trying to hire a coach with a plan on how to be successful at Syracuse in particular not just anywhere. There’s too many challenges here to not be prepared for them. At least Wildhack will understand what it’s going to take, not sure the guy that hired Dino did but I loved the hiring of Dino at the time.

it will be a tough hire but the knowledge of this program would be important to me, not just a guy that’s happy for the pay hike and to be a HC at a P5 program. find the guy who Knows exactly what they are getting into here and what their vision is to be successful and I think you might be on the right road as there is too big a learning curve with some hires. Could be a coach that has done well under similar circumstances as well, who has recruited in areas that aren’t hotspots, done more with less but show me the track record and demonstrated success.

If you can't find a coach with head coaching experience that meets the criteria. I would probably look towards White. At least he knows the landscape
Good post. I like Joe M and or White.

All I need to look at when I view this program as a fan is that it is lead by a head coach who has been here seven years and won six games or more twice. He has continually under recruited at certain key positions by either ignoring glaring needs or recruited lots of bodies that are not ever going to help the program. His recruit classes consistently rank at the bottom of the conference. Clock management, penalties, lack of nutrition specialists, multiple staff changes all delivering the same results. The powers to be at Syracuse University seem to be content with the results and happy to collect a check. When all is said and done and the college football landscape changes again, Syracuse University will be sorry that they chose to settle for mediocre and sat on their wallet for all these years.

even if you don't cherry pick, babers has a better SRS than marrone.

SRS says marrone was exactly average. SRS of 0. Babers .28 points better than average, rounding makes them the same

people like marrone because they extrapolate the 2012 trend and imagine what could've been
Why is SRS this holy grail of stats. W/L record he is barely better then Shafer and worse off then Marrone (with the caveat of BE vs ACC) but Babers has more resources given to him then both coaches combined.

They win out they would be 10-3, 5-7, 5-7, 8-5 the last four real seasons.

Honestly, if he got fired after BC it wouldn't bother me. I've seen enough in 7 years to know that he's not a very good coach. But I'm not passionate about it either. He'll come back and I guess we just have to hope we stay healthier next season. Shrug.
Also, for a supposed offensive minded coach his talent eval on that side of the ball has been all time bad. Tucker’s greatness saves him a little bit, but judging by the rest of his resume he could have stumbled on that. Do we even have a top 3 offensive recruit under HCDB?
1. Tucker
2. Gadsen
3. Ellis/Taj

Marrone got a hard time, but imo he was our best talent evaluator, talent developer, and brought in some of the top talent, or at least was involved with some, and was only improving. I'd be ecstatic if he would be interested enough in coming back. Take away his last name and how do we get a HC with a resume like that?
