Yes, playing Nova and Wake Forrest have them off to a flying start. You can't tell me that playing a crap schedule doesn't have it's advantages. SU still looks like it's in the GRob area to those who just look simply at W/L's.

Perception is everything. 2-0 is better than 0-2

It also proves there is no reward for being a tough hard nosed team and playing this OOC. Hell, even finishing 6-2 last year was basically unnoticed.

Exactly right. ^This is why you schedule your cupcakes early.

I had a meeting at a local hotel today, and optimistically asked the manager, "So...you going to be full up for the SU game weekend?" ( Keep in mind this is a hotel that is smack damn in a primary location.). His response, "Nope, but it's only Wagner...and of course the team is terrible this year."

AAAAAAAaaarrrrggghhhhhhhh!!!!!

Another uneducated Syracuse resident.

Speaking of the ACC...who on gods green earth do you root for in the Maryland vs UConn game?
Wow. I forgot that was this weekend. I cheer for a tie. Although...a tie is pretty much a win for UConn.

The only thing a difficult OOC schedule does good for you is when calculating the BCS standings; but let's be honest, that really isn't going to apply to us so let's start scheduling some cupcakes to start the season. I think Auburn High has an opening next Labor Day.

Just for the record in 2011 Syracuse had the same beginning we beat Wake Forest at home to start the season, and then we struggled and beat Rhode Island the second game. Boston College just did it in reverse they struggled at home versus Villanova were down at the half and then beat Wake at home. The 3rd game in 2011 Syracuse flew out to LA and got curb stomped by Barkley and USC, and BC will fly out to LA and won't get curb stomped but will lose to USC. That SU team finished 5-7 and I think this BC team will finish 4-8 or 5-7.

Reading this post just raised my blood pressure. I cannot stand the uneducated masses just making generalizations. Please tell me you pointed out why we'll be OK, or better yet...smacked some sense into him.

Yeah - the ACC ESPN blog is filled with this kind if stuff. After week 1, teams moved up after beating FCS teams while our close loss had us move down 2 spots.

Wins against anyone is better than a loss to a good team, according to the media. Sigh.

I have always wanted to watch us play good teams. However, this year schedule ... haveing us start the season against two Big10 opponents has already put us in a hole I am not sure we can play ourselves out of. I do not think we need to scrap the bottom of the barrel but as it was stated above, we do not currently need to add more strength to our schedule. Down the road I hope we are worried about the top ten and strength of schedule but right now we need to worry about image, fan base and our players.

I used to be proud of how difficult a schedule that SU played. However for a good decade this strategy has hurt our Bowl chance.

These 0-2 starts absolutely destroy any buzz coming out of Fall camp. Perfect example I have 4 season tickets and am trying to find someone to bring up my GrandFather so i can go early and tailgate. I ask my Dad and his response was " Are you kidding me??? I'm not going to watch Wagner!" Trust me we have a great relationship, but the only time we argue is when it comes to Syracuse sports. He is one of those constantly negative fans, who watches every game, never attends, but makes a point to text me throughout with complaints and criticism. I would say 75% of the fan base watches every single game, but most couldn't tell you 5 defensive players. All they see if the schedule with Wagner on deck. Absolute worst case scenario if you are looking for support. The sad thing is most think it's a huge mistake playing a school such as Wager. It's really a no win situation, unless of course we are 2-0.

We really need to start easing up on the schedule so these scenario's never happen again. We just aren't going to get the community support back again unless we put out a consistent winner, and i'm talking 8 wins a season minimum kind of winner.

I know all fan bases have their complainers, but at least they show up to the games, so they sort of earn it in a way. Our fan base just tends to complain to complain.

This man's opinion is legitimate. What has this team done to make anyone think it isn't terrible? Have you seen this offense?

Personally, I'd be less concerned about the local "uneducated masses" and more concerned with getting more than two dozen students to the Carrier Dome.

Since the turn of the century Syracuse has had 4 winning seasons.

6-5 (2000)
10-3 (2001)
8-5 (2010)
8-5 (2012)

67-92 (42%) is our record since 2000.

Our fan base is currently scared sh@tless because we might have another GRob on our hands. In the first game of the 2009 season, after Robinson was fired, fans showed their support by nearly having a sellout against Minnesota. The game was airing on ESPN2 as well.

Hopefully they show up and see for themselves then.

Yes, I've seen the offense. While I don't necessarily 100% disagree with his opinion, it just reminds me of so many people I know who say the same thing every year, "They stink." And it seems so many people make the same generalization every year, even when we're respectable (2010 & 2012). The way I read the quote just struck a nerve with me.

Take a look at Texas Tech. They looked more or less like garbage last night, as did TCU.

But TT will likely be ranked #25 this week, and might remain undefeated well into October. And if TCU loses every game out, nobody is going to move LSU down or TT out of the rankings. They never retroactively move teams down based on the opponent.

Which means Oklahoma is possibly looking at a nice quality win against a team ranked about #15 in October, which is actually not a very good team. Somebody at some point in the Big 12 is going to blow their doors off and look good for doing so.

NC State may not be any better than Syracuse. They escaped the Richmond game by the skin of their teeth. But if they beat Clemson on Thursday, they'll be ranked, and will likely remain ranked until they play FSU at the end of October. If they don't beat Clemson, they might still be 5-1 going into FSU and be on the verge of a ranking. And they may really not be that good.

It's not just Syracuse area residents who look at college football like this...it's the media, the voters, the fans of every school, the bowls, and the recruits. There is NO upside to a more difficult schedule unless you are in the running for the top four, and even then it's VERY arguable. In many cases you're better off going undefeated than taking one loss and hoping your schedule puts you in over other one loss teams.

It's not like the Dome is packed to the gills by this scheduling philosophy. Much better to build your ticket appeal by convincing people you have a good team than by trying to get them to come out to see other good teams. Considering you're going to have FSU, Clemson and Louisville on your schedule, and if Pitt and NCSU continue this scheduling format as well they will look good, you should have enough good opponents if you just schedule one semi-attractive team OOC a season.

It does kind of suck, you're fighting a weak college football culture there for sure.

Unfortunately that's a very true story Lou. Thank God for this board and the die-hards that visit here every day so I can read & discuss SU football in an intelligent fashion. It's all the people here that make it all worthwhile, especially through the tough times.

the 2014 schedule is shaping up as the model I prefer going forward. Open the season with a combo of FCS/lower FBS home games, then one game against a peer level BCS school (maryland) then one premiere game (ND).
