Acc and Notre Dame met today...

Actually I wouldn't mind seeing Notre Dame play 6 conference games in football every year. They could still play USC, Navy,Air Force,Army, Michigan St, Purdue. They could keep their money for the out of conference games, and a prorated amt for the 6 conference games. Much as I dislike Notre Dame, this would be a good deal for both sides. Notre Dame would still be Quasi independent in Football, but have a permanent place for all their Olympic sports, in a conference with many teams they have played thru the years. The idea is to logical to happen.

I don't see why ND has to do anything except find a home for its other sports.
Independence has been very, very good for them- and some sorta tie-in with the OB/ACC is all they really need.
They are the exception in cfb, whether we like it or not. I know several ND alums, and ND will have to be dragged kicking and screaming into joining a conference.
I doubt the ACC will accept partial membership, but to guarantee the BE's destruction, Swofford might have something ingenious up his sleeve. We shall see.

So, ND can go 6-6 and get an orange bowl invite?

Good question- but turn that around...could the ACC champ go 6-6 (unlikely) and get an Orange Bowl invite?:noidea:

Considering all of the things Jack Swarbrick has said over the past couple of months, there is no way ND is putting their football in any conference for at least another decade. And from everything Swofford has said, I don't see the ACC allowing federated members.

Even if a meeting did take place, it must have been about the Orange Bowl criteria for ND.

Cheers,
Neil

You guys are nuts with all of this stuff, it's like dungeons and dragons for sports geeks. 99% of all of this is nonsense

I think you can add 1% to your number.

I'd love it if ND were meeting with the ACC about being a member. I'd also like Donovan McNabb to have 4 more years eligibility. I think both have an equal chance.

No need to worrry - Va Tech, Clemson, Miami, FSU, Ga Tech are not going 6-6.

Despite all the BS we seem to hear, our conference - the ACC - is a very good football conference.

And it will continue to get better as Syracuse University continues to get better.

As far as ND is concerned, I don't buy any of this talk. ND was directly involved in the discussions and got exactly what it wanted.

The Irish are not going anywhere.

^+1...agree with OrangePA and others...remember, this is not soley about the ACC and Notre Dame...it is about the chess match of expansion and what happens if Notre Dame goes somewhere else like Bees brought up...the Big 12, B1G, Pac 12 etc. There are plenty of scenarios out there and I believe that the ACC is discussing options within conference and with Notre Dame. Secondly, with the Orange Bowl signed contract...an ACC team will be in the bowl and it will be the conference champion unless its in the semis. A second best team with a 6-6 record would also be in the Orange Bowl if conference champ went to another bowl.

So you're saying there is a chance?

Very good, but not top 4 NC good. Until a few schools really pick it up it will remain so.

I think ACC is top 4 NC good. Only way to prove it is on the field; however, outside of Oklahoma & Texas in Big12, strength of conference is questionable. Same with PAC12. I see no reason why ACC can't be considered top 4 conference now. If it's all speculation then I why not.

What if the only games that count toward the ACC championship game were in-division only? Two seven team divisions playing all 6 opponents. The ACC could still schedule two or three cross-divisional rivalry games &/or a routine switch of opponents (excluding Notre Dame) that wouldn't count in the conference standings. Could also mix up the divisions every X years to add more variability/allow everyone to play the Irish.

It kinda makes it seem like two separate conferences, but the money is pooled and there'd be no gripes about someone lucking into a divisional title because they didn't happen to play the power teams on the other side that season. If the NCAA would go for it, I'd be okay with this concession.

I'd like to think the ACC's 2nd best team can do better than 6-6.
comment is that a second team is going even it was 6-6..i am expecting much better but the Orange Bowl is the ACC's regardless of team record.

Not conference, talking teams. When and how often has the ACC had a top 4 team?

ACC has not been top 4 good in the last 8 years of so. If you are talking potential, ACC easily has top 4 potential. However, that potential is based upon Miami and FSU becoming powers once again, VA Tech and Clemson holding steady, and the next tier (us included) becoming top 25 players.

I just can't be that certain.

Va Tech is always right there - few would be surprised if the Hokies were to make it to the final four. I think the same hold true for Clemson and maybe to a lesser extent, FSU.

I think when one compares the conferences, other than Iguess the SEC, one really splits hairs - all in all, the ACC is as good as the Big Ten, the Pac 12 or the Big XII in my opinion.

If Donovan makes some babies, and he's as good at it as his old man, then yes, probably a pretty good chance. I guess even better than ND to the ACC.

It's the problem of everyone looking at the here and now. But, for some reason, Texas never loses points in that equation. They haven't been very good the past 2 years.

ACC's perception problems stem from the lack of BCS bowl wins, and the Miami/FSU problem, they just haven't been what they were. Both very correctable. If people want to call the ACC the 5th best league, that's fine. What you really don't want to be called right now is the 6th best league. Line is the sand is very likely being drawn (again, final revenue sharing plan will officially flush it out).

No school is "recession proof" when it comes to downturn in on-field performance. However, schools like Texas, USC, Alabama and Ohio State have the ability to weather dips better than most everyone else. These schools can withstand a 2 to 3 year period of mediocrity and still be considered elite programs.

But as Notre Dame has shown, no school can weather a prolonged downturn and still be considered elite.

So, they are overrated, underachievers and mediocre - all at the same time??
