ACC/Big East Merger?

Im Not No Way GIF

How would that work? Big East schools join for everything but football? that would be a giant conference

We’re hearing UCLA and USC coaches lamenting the travel in the Big 10. Not enjoying it at all. Time for the ACC to make a move to get the four Big 10 schools to move to the ACC and form a west coast division of the ACC. Adding UCLA, USC, OREGON AND WASHINGTON would make ESPN redo their TV contract with the ACC. The coaches are hating the travel. We did it once, I can’t imagine doing it 3-4 times a season.

How much is the buy out? If it outweighs the travel. They won’t leave.

Washington and Oregon outright rejected the ACC once already. They have zero interest in the ACC.

At this point… just whatever.

I’ll just feel like an old man shaking my fist at the clouds if I bother worrying about and inevitably complaining about this stuff.

I feel like college sports was ruined in the last 10 years or so.
If it wasn't for gambling, it would be dead.

So many articles out there now about this. The current Big East commissioner is openly interviewing about it. Of course; what do they get in their TV contract vs. the ACC - 1/5 as much? Seems to me the Big East is lobbying for a merger as a way to up their contract, while ESPN seems to be sacrificing the ACC in order to max out on the SEC.

Superconferences have defeated the purpose of conferences and realignment has killed a lot of rivalries and the pageantry of college sports. NIL and free-for-all transfers (while objectively fair to the athletes) have taken away whatever else was left.

I watch pro sports but never loved them. I always saw that bit of WWE in them; the entertainment factor and spectacle at the expense of the sport. College ball was different in the right ways. College ball isn’t too different from pro ball now. It’s arguably worse.

It’s definitely worse. We lost a lot of what you mentioned that was good about college sports and replaced it with a pro-style system sans any kind of parity or cost control measures and a dramatically inferior quality of product in the field.
