ACC/PAC Merger Idea

Don't get the logic in this line of reasoning. Is the Pitt/WVU rivalry game the Backyard Brawl, a value proportion?
What do you not get? Nobody will watch UConn play almost anybody in football. UConn football is a bigger dud than BC. Mass can never aspire, realistically, even to what UConn has.

Yes, the Backyard Brawl has value, because lots of people do watch it - every time it is played.

Do you just assume that all game between teams in bordering states have the same basic value?

Unfortunately the only thing the SEC and Big care about is more money.
Within the next 10 years the majority of Americans won't be watching college football.
Their are too many other sports and entertainment on TV, that those schools will regret destroying the other conferences.
They are arranging a great deal of harm, but their greed and desire to out-money the other is the demon that owns them.

It is still possible to build things up.

He also has to prove he can win at a top level. JSU is not just 1AA (FCS) but the lowest 1AA. No SWAC team wins the 1AA National Championship or even reaches the semis. I doubt one has reached the quarters in at least 25 years.

Winning in the SWAC is like the 1A version of winning in CUSA.
The SWAC does not compete in the D-1AA championship. They play the Celebration Bowl vs. the MEAC champion instead for the big paycheck.

Yesterday got me thinking of attendance by state.

9 states have no FBS team:
Alaska, Delaware, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode island, South Dakota, Vermont

2 states have their top program under 19k per game:
Connecticut, New Mexico

3 states have their top in between 20k and 25k:
Hawaii, Wyoming, Nevada

5 states between 33k and 39k:
New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Idaho

5 states between 40k and 50k:
Kansas, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, New Jersey

8 states between 51k and 59k:
California, Utah, Kentucky, North Carolina, Mississippi, West Virginia, Oregon, Missouri

4 states between 60k and 68k:
Iowa, Washington, Arkansas, Virginia

2 states between 75k and 76k:
Indiana, Wisconsin

4 states between 80k and 88k:
Nebraska, Florida, Oklahoma, South Carolina

4 states between 91k and 100k:
Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee

4 states between 100k and 111k:
Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Alabama

Of the 41 FBS playing states the median top attendance per state is 56,209 per game. So the following states would have a 2nd team in the top half: Texas, Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan, Florida, Iowa. No one would have a 3rd team.

If we move to the top two thirds of the list (47,003) then we have...

3 teams: Texas, Florida

2 teams: Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Utah, North Carolina

So just over 25% of the FBS playing states have 2 teams.

And if we move to the top three quarters (40,817)...

5 teams: Texas

4 teams: Florida

3 teams: Indiana

2 teams: Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan, Iowa, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Utah, North Carolina, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, California, Virginia, Arizona

So just shy of 40% have 2 teams.

Some other notes...

Texas is the only state with 2 teams over 95k.
Alabama is the only other one over 85k.
South Carolina only other over 70k.
Michigan and Florida over 60k.
At 50k you can add Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, Oklahoma and give a 3rd team to Florida and Texas.

I think it will be hard to justify the B16 or SEC adding a 2nd or 3rd in state school under 60k at this point. Does the B16 really NEED a 3rd team from Cali? Especially when that team has a small fanbase? I can't see the B16 taking Pitt or Iowa State. The SEC taking both FSU and Miami. The SEC taking Louisville or GA Tech or Texas Tech or Oklahoma State.

So when the musical chairs finally stop, it is likely that only Indiana will have three teams within one of the two major conferences, and only Florida will have three teams combined between the two conferences. California has the next best shot should the B16 take Stanford or Cal (cannot see the justification for both). The Two staters will likely be Texas, Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, California, Virginia, Georgia (combined), Illinois, Tennessee. Anyone else would be a long shot.

I believe Tennessee and LSU were both over 100,000 last year and Alabama was at 98,000.

Those were 4 year averages I used
I expect Tennessee to increase their average now that they have finally found a good coach. I'm impressed Alabama's is over 100,000. Their capacity was reduced by about 1500 to 100,0077 in 2020. They're selling out nearly every game to hit that average.

Actually that would be a good conference, with good divisions.
Old Big East, ACC, and Pac 10, have all time zones covered.
And Notre Dame could play Stanford every year.
I mean, yeah, that's true. But at the same time, the big 10 has USC. Which is also a big time rival of d*** So that cancels that out plus you know. Let's say for the million time everybody has said this. , the $$$ disparity

Syracuse and Louisville or Pitt (although them to the B12 makes sense too) joining the BIG would make a lot of sense for everyone involved. Wish we went in ‘14

It would be very good in all sports. And its TV numbers for football would be very close to BT numbers.

Colorado was total dud in the Pac even in football TV viewers, so not having them to the Big 12. is bad only for year neat 8+8+8 divisions.

Colorado is going to be the talk of college football with Coach Prime if he turns it around and I believe he will.
I was out there in the Denver TV market qwehn they ewer hoping under Barnett. Almost nobody really cared then. Now nobody cares. Denver is totally a Pro sports market. Big 12 membership cannot alter that.

Compared to what? Pitt/WVU always draws many viewers. Pitt-WVU cannot outdraw Bama-Auburn, but its will always outdraw Wake or BC vs Pitt or anybody else.

42,000+ for their spring game, yeah, I guess nobody cares. 10th best nationally, below Clemson's 50,000 at 9

How much of that was Coach "Prime" curiosity?
all of it, it will be interesting to see how Prime does and if he does well, what happens to the program after he inevitably leaves for a big school in the South.

Sean Lewis

I think he is going to get crushed this year.
It sure will be interesting to watch. I think in the beginning of the season he and the Buffs will be the biggest story in college football.

Im a big buff fan and im glad he has energized the base. I simply cant stand his shtick.
Wants to be called coach Prime. All about him. I hope they do well but i think hes in over his prime on this gig

with espn laying off tons of employees, it would be a bad look for them to pay additional for us to expand right now and we would need to get a block of Pac schools to all agree to join for it to make sense. You need a minimum of 4 schools and more likely 6 to create a western wing to create the all coast conference. You could then try to get ND to amend the scheduling alliance since they want to have coast to coast exposure they can be placed in the west pod for football and fold in the Stanford game so they could do 6 games instead of 5 yearly. You can also get creative on the scheduling with a 9 game schedule to get more $ since espn has to have a number they had valued the pac 12 at in total.
For arguments sake say it was 273 for the 10 members minus 23 as i would have Colorado in tier 2.
there are tiers:
Oregon, Washington, Arizona St, Stanford- acc pro rate say 37.5mil per yr by themselves with a slight increase folding into existing acc.
Utah, California, Arizona- 23 mil each
------------------------------------------------
Oregon State, Washington St-15.5 mil each

I think we would take the top 4 right now no questions asked and would result in a increase of around 10 mil per school minus some additional expenses not including acc network increase.
If we took 6 members, it would probably be a little bit less but a decent increase
The bottom 2 are destined for the mountain west conference unless Oregon and Washington can pull a Virginia.
The scheduling/acc network thing is an option but only if Oregon and Washington stay in the PAC whatever they are now

Where it gets tricky is do we want to have the option of picking a few from the big 12 down the road before they have another contract completed or will we assume that by then there will be some defections.

He has Lewis his AHC. Lewis would have been a home run hire without Prime.
