Yesterday got me thinking of attendance by state.
9 states have no FBS team:
Alaska, Delaware, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode island, South Dakota, Vermont
2 states have their top program under 19k per game:
Connecticut, New Mexico
3 states have their top in between 20k and 25k:
Hawaii, Wyoming, Nevada
5 states between 33k and 39k:
New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Idaho
5 states between 40k and 50k:
Kansas, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, New Jersey
8 states between 51k and 59k:
California, Utah, Kentucky, North Carolina, Mississippi, West Virginia, Oregon, Missouri
4 states between 60k and 68k:
Iowa, Washington, Arkansas, Virginia
2 states between 75k and 76k:
Indiana, Wisconsin
4 states between 80k and 88k:
Nebraska, Florida, Oklahoma, South Carolina
4 states between 91k and 100k:
Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee
4 states between 100k and 111k:
Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Alabama
Of the 41 FBS playing states the median top attendance per state is 56,209 per game. So the following states would have a 2nd team in the top half: Texas, Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan, Florida, Iowa. No one would have a 3rd team.
If we move to the top two thirds of the list (47,003) then we have...
3 teams: Texas, Florida
2 teams: Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Utah, North Carolina
So just over 25% of the FBS playing states have 2 teams.
And if we move to the top three quarters (40,817)...
5 teams: Texas
4 teams: Florida
3 teams: Indiana
2 teams: Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan, Iowa, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Utah, North Carolina, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, California, Virginia, Arizona
So just shy of 40% have 2 teams.
Some other notes...
Texas is the only state with 2 teams over 95k.
Alabama is the only other one over 85k.
South Carolina only other over 70k.
Michigan and Florida over 60k.
At 50k you can add Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, Oklahoma and give a 3rd team to Florida and Texas.
I think it will be hard to justify the B16 or SEC adding a 2nd or 3rd in state school under 60k at this point. Does the B16 really NEED a 3rd team from Cali? Especially when that team has a small fanbase? I can't see the B16 taking Pitt or Iowa State. The SEC taking both FSU and Miami. The SEC taking Louisville or GA Tech or Texas Tech or Oklahoma State.
So when the musical chairs finally stop, it is likely that only Indiana will have three teams within one of the two major conferences, and only Florida will have three teams combined between the two conferences. California has the next best shot should the B16 take Stanford or Cal (cannot see the justification for both). The Two staters will likely be Texas, Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, California, Virginia, Georgia (combined), Illinois, Tennessee. Anyone else would be a long shot.
