Not allowed to criticize Bailey around here. At least I can't anyways, got a stern talking to in another thread.

I have no problem with your criticism of Bailey when he asks questions like this on the ACC conference call. Not the right place to ask questions that Dino won't even answer anyway. This is multiple times he's asked questions like that. But I still think your freaking out over the tweet from the other night was also silly.

Not defending Bailey here. Just shedding more light on the situation.

The only reason Bailey asked what he asked on the conference call is because SU gives zero access. No ability to talk to anyone behind closed doors and off the record, no ability to get a feel for what's going on, no chance to discuss and flesh things out. Bailey is asking the question on the call because it's literally only the opportunity he has. He's taking advantage of an opportunity that SU can't control.

And SU can't cut him off because SU Athletics would look petty and hyper-sensitive. It would be a unnecessary bad PR situation for a department that has had bad PR situations in the last 5 years.

It's the dance that PR and journalists do.

Whether it was a good question or good timing is beyond my scope.

And asking dumbass questions like that during an ACC teleconference call is a fantastic way to continue to get zero access. Sorry but that move is short-sighted and idiotic, especially considering he's not going to get an answer anyway about it since it's the wrong forum and it involves talking about a recruit and the staff is highly sensitive of that considering that even the slightest wrong move can lead to a NCAA violation.

Gotta wonder how the players feel about his comments to the media. Hes making it sound like they're going to get blown out of the water. Sure, hes honest and realistic, but I wouldn't be too fond of that kind of talk.

I'm sure that he's got the exact opposite message for them. "It's not their fault! They didn't know!"

don't you think the conversation in the locker room is a bit different?

these type of comments to the media is typical coach speak. it means nothing.

There are so many things that fans / readers would want to know, but we don't get to know ANY of it. Babers is so insanely tight-lipped that NOTHING gets out. So any time any little morsel floats out, they pretty much have to run with it.

So ask a question that will get answered. Because something is better than nothing.

Why not try to earn his trust? Why keep asking these questions in a setting where it's obvious it's not the time and place? We all could have said there is no way Babers would answer that question in this format. I think it's counterproductive to the goal of more access when you continue to poke and prod in that situation.
Because what good is earning Babers' trust when that might not get you anything? And trust takes time. Bailey has a job to do today.
Bailey hasn’t earned the right to talk to anyone behind closed doors or off the record. And he sure as heck isn’t going to anything good when he always writes with a negative slant. His agenda is negative.

Yes I know it’s not his job to be a cheerleader but your access is limited when you’re not, and rightfully so.
Bailey's not Babers' child. You don't "earn the right" in the media - you cultivate. If you "earn the right", you're feeding out of someone's hand and being controlled. Being controlled is not journalism.

I don't see the negative slant. There's this weird assumption that because someone says something not shining about a program, they automatically hate it. It's not true about 97% of the time. Bailey does a poor job of hiding his frustration at the situation he's in, but he's not calling former Babers players and looking for anything negative.

So instead, we get a cold war where Babers won't crack and Bailey tries to create a crack.

I was kinda wondering that also. He's really playing Clemson up. He might also be telling the team a different message privately.

So ask a question that will get answered. Because something is better than nothing.
Like what? Why didn't the program announce Jason Emerich was out for the season 3 weeks ago? Who's hurt this week? Give us insights into your game plan? Can you give us coach speak about Clemson? Where'd you go during the bye week? He's not going to answer any of it.

I never said it was a good idea. Just said why he did what he did.

Undersell. Overdeliver. :)

Fair enough. If I remember correctly, access got restricted when Marrone came on board, even while Donnie and Dave R were covering the team still. And then it basically became shutdown mode when Michael Cohen brought forth his scorched earth approach to reporting.

It's not who's covering the team. Couldn't matter any less. Because you've also got a ton of TV guys who have been around forever who are getting shut out too.

It's all about protecting your operational secrets (recruiting, schemes, injuries, etc.) and making sure you can bury scandals.

Because what are you getting right now? Nothing, so why not try and earn that trust. Maybe Bailey is. We just disagree, I don't think anyone would get any info like that, if at all, until you earn his trust. That is how I see the situation. The longer you poke and prod the longer it might take to earn that trust.

I'm not saying Bailey was right in this situation. I'm just saying that having Babers trust him isn't going to write his column tonight.

'earning', 'cultivating' ... same thing. He's done neither. Just because he's a journo doesn't give him unfeathered access to the inside of the program. You have to be trusted and liked to get good info and he's not.

Being controlled? bottom line, do you want a story or not. If not then Bailey can continue to go against the grain; asking dumb questions that have no chance of a response.

He'll hang on to this recruit comment about position switches for the next 6 months until spring ball reveals what's going on.

How would you know that? How would you know how much work he does behind the scenes? I don't, and neither do you.

This whole thing seems far more to me like a bunch of middle schoolers piling onto someone they don't like as opposed to anything of real substance.

I'm sure that he's got the exact opposite message for them. "It's not their fault! They didn't know!"
yeah but as a 18-20 year old kid, you have to wonder what's real and fake then.

That's his job. But the angle he pursued today and the wasted questions on injuries every single press conference are not getting it done. He needs to find something interesting to ask that he will answer. I've listened to ever one of these and the DO guys, Carlson, and ESPN all ask better questions and get interesting answers.

Couldn't he ask it at the weekly presser for the locals?

Wonder if he thinks it's easier to sneak it into a phone call, than to get yelled at in person.

I actually don't think it should be asked at all until after the season, or maybe during bowl prep when you test out such things.

yeah but as a 18-20 year old kid, you have to wonder what's real and fake then.

I don't think so. All it takes is a "I've been telling the media X, but you know..."

He could be playing a giant troll game for all I know. I'm just trying to provide a logical explanation.

I'm sure if he reads this, he'll appreciate the coaching.

This is such a media-guy answer. Of course you're going to protect things that could harm your chances at winning. That's job security. What scandal?

I listen to all of these and watch most post-game press conferences. Bailey never gets the chuckle "good question" > interesting answer trifecta.
