This is such a media-guy answer. Of course you're going to protect things that could harm your chances at winning. That's job security. What scandal?
I understand the protect camp mentality coaches have. I don't understand the hatred for media people who try to get inside said camp. Both sides just doing their jobs.

And I don't watch press conferences. I find them excruciating.

It's not hatred. It's exasperation - when you hear him ask the same questions or questions that should be asked in a different setting? I want him to succeed in getting good stories.

I don't know anything about his process. I just know that reporting is hard when you're responsible for covering an entity that has more resources and power than you do.

its not the schools job to provide information to the PS. it is the PS job to ask questions that can be answered. Whether they get answered is another issue. what industry does not shut down access when all they get is perceived negative slants on things.

'earning', 'cultivating' ... same thing. He's done neither. Just because he's a journo doesn't give him unfeathered access to the inside of the program. You have to be trusted and liked to get good info and he's not.

Being controlled? bottom line, do you want a story or not. If not then Bailey can continue to go against the grain; asking dumb questions that have no chance of a response.

He'll hang on to this recruit comment about position switches for the next 6 months until spring ball reveals what's going on.
So if I told you that before Spring practice started Babers was all chummie with the PS guys but once practice started that all shut down...what would you think?
To me that is a coach that wants to be in total control of all information flowing from his program. That is why all access has been denied and it wouldn't matter who was asking the questions. And that is also why you see the SU football program and SUAD more in control of what is put out their for public consumption than previous staffs.

I would believe all of that is true.

I would also think that even so, the old guard at the PS, like Rahme and Webb would still have more access than the young dot com journos. And I would also believe the dot com journos don’t make a very good first impression because of the amateur type questions they ask.

Dino and the AD controlling the info is fine with me. The kids can toe the line and not act like investigative journos working for dateline. They report on a college football team. It shouldn’t be about controversy.

I don't think it is about controversy but rather lack of access. Last year the OC and DC were made available each week to the media. This year they are doing a weekly ten minute "get to know your new staff" through Park at the end of the coaches show. And I know that one player has not been made available to the media because it was felt he spoke too much during one interview. So this type of control the message environment causes the media to ask questions during the few available opportunities granted them. It's Babers program and he can run it how he wants. I have always been an advocate of SU controlling the message and doing a better job putting out info but then no one should be surprised that the media will try and get answers to questions anyway they think they can.

Yeah - sure. That's pretty much the job he signed up for. If I were him I'd try to get a meeting with the AD and try to work through some of his issues in private rather than on twitter.

As we've discussed before - you can ask hard questions and write difficult stories in a way that has empathy for the fan and not light the bridge on fire with the administration.

I think this can all be true and still build s better relationship.

Asking questions you know you won't get a good answer on or asking at weird times hurts their chances.

Every sports team tries to limit access. But that doesn't mean it's a good idea to voice complaints publicly or get more aggressive at asking bad questions.

He's young. He'll find a way.

By controversy I meant he's always looking for a controversial story. It's football, not Dateline.

The article Nate Mink wrote yesterday about Parris Bennett was fantastic.

Syracuse football linebacker Parris Bennett is living the good life -- and racking up tackles

That is because they were allowed access to some of the players they requested.

Exactly. That's why their complaints about access are a little hollow.

I think their complaints have to do about lack of access to the coaching staff more than the players. Shafer did the same thing with players not being allowed to talk to media unless it was approved by the staff first. But the media with Shafer had more access to the coaches. :noidea:

I get it.

I just think he complains too much on Twitter about access. It's probably justified - and I could always unfollow him ;)...

Hope he gets better. Like I said, I like him fine.

Yeah Twitter has some great features too. Like unfollow, block... and report when someone becomes a real jerk.
